<Eddi|zuHause> i'm in this plane rabbit hole again...
<Eddi|zuHause> and every change makes it worse...
<Pinkbeast> Eddi|zuHause: With or without FAR?

<Eddi|zuHause> with FAR

<Pinkbeast> Eddi|zuHause: An obvious place to go is lighter wings (easier to break, but in the extreme case, on an SST equatorial O, who's even going around any corners?)
<Eddi|zuHause> i'm not trying to reach orbit. i'm trying to fly a plane. particularly, one that can do high altitude atmosphere scans at various places
<Eddi|zuHause> also, i've paused that project for now, doing other stuff

<Pinkbeast> Eddi|zuHause: Ah, unfortunate - but in a FAR world you do have a lot of scope to use lighter wings, even if the case I described was extreme.
<Eddi|zuHause> successfully landed a probe on the northern ice cap from a suborbital rocket
<Eddi|zuHause> that also cleared some of the high altitude atmosphere scans

<LunchBot> You park your capture craft around Minmus. You forgot to make weird noises so you just didn't make it.
<XXCoder> aww
<XXCoder> noises make things go

<LunchBot> Leeroy Kerman begins their coronal injection burn. Oh no! There's too much power - it's unstable!
<XXCoder> oh no!
<XXCoder> do we have leeroy vats?
<Althego> lol leeroy kerman
<XXCoder> yeah

<sandbox> I had a dream that I was on a plane while watching a rocket launch
<Mat2ch> Sounds like a nice dream
<raptop> But was the rocket launched from the plane?

<sandbox> no

<LunchBot> You try reticulating KSP's splines. You accidentally discover that putting a prism in your tea does not produce any new flavors.

<Eddi|zuHause> how long before mun impact should i cancel my horizontal speed?
<Eddi|zuHause> this is going to be horrible...
<Althego> you only need to have that right before touchdown
<Althego> however if you are targeting a specific point, you probably want to stop when you are near it
<darsie> Eddi|zuHause: One way to do it is go to an e.g. 10 km orbit and burn retrograde till your speed is 0. How deep you dropped is how high you should start your landing burn.
<darsie> You can also do a deorbit burn and use KER to see when you should start a suicide burn.
<darsie> It's not totally accurate.
<darsie> High acceleration is more efficient, but at the cost of a heavier engine.
<darsie> 2-5 TWR is ok
<Eddi|zuHause> i should have plenty of TWR, what i lack is manoeverability... and i don't have a lot of monopropellant left
<darsie> Does your engine gimbal?
<darsie> Then you can use RCS to turn retrograde an then use your engine to hold retrograde while you can turn RCS off.
<Eddi|zuHause> the key point will be that moment after burning retrograde and turning the landing legs down
<Althego> hehe, yes do not point them up
<Mat2ch> (And if you are wondering what happend: The can opener bridge opened a truck! )
<Althego> finally
<Althego> it has been more than a year
<darsie> Eddi|zuHause: I you activate retrograde hold, your rocket will turn down during your deorbit/landing burn. Don't forget to switch from orbital to ground speed if that doesn't happen automatically.
<darsie> If*
ergZay has quit [Quit: This computer has gone to sleep]
<Eddi|zuHause> nope, that wasn't a landing
<darsie> You can also throttle your engine very low instead of turning it off for attitude control.
<darsie> like, if you discover you slowed down too much.
<Eddi|zuHause> that was a landing, but it's sliding downhill at 0.4m/s and doesn't let me save
<Althego> try not landing on a slope
Tank2333 has joined #KSPOfficial
<darsie> If you start your deorbit burn 1 s earlier/later, you come done 580ish m shorter/farther.

<Eddi|zuHause> i'm probably not good enough to go jetpack hopping on the mun over longer distances...
Althego has quit [Quit: HMI Module Alpha Humana on approach to Space Station Mercury]
<Mat2ch> The do short hops :)
<Eddi|zuHause> i made a mistake... i disconnected my return craft, and didn't check it had any electric charge left for steering
<Eddi|zuHause> it's ok, these wimpy tourists surely won't mind 1 day without power, in the coldness of space :p
<raptop> Better get them some sunlight and BBQ roll, I guess
<Mat2ch> Nah, they can cuddle.
<Mat2ch> Good for teambuilding
<Mat2ch> also the reentry will not be as hot then
<Eddi|zuHause> so, i should have brought a nuclear power generator to the mun base
<Eddi|zuHause> but that was too heavy

<Eddi|zuHause> what exactly does it mean when it says "the station must be fully assembled when launched"?
<raptop> AIUI, that the station as launched must have all the features for the contract. No bolting on parts or in-orbit assembly afterwards
<Eddi|zuHause> i have a contract for a "station" around the mun, and an "unmanned probe" around the mun, and wondering if i could launch them both in one mission
<raptop> unsure
