US Government security requirements no longer permit CDDIS to offer data via traditional unencrypted anonumous ftp; this service was discontinued on October 31, 2020. All data are still available, however access must be via HTTPS or ftp-ssl.
<egg|laptop|egg>
In order to access the CDDIS archive, users will need to use a client that supports Transport Security Layer (TLS). When using the https protocol (for example, cURL, Wget, or Python commands/scripts) users will need to have an Earthdata Login account.

note to self: most of these cursed formats work on the assumption that only arrays of bytes are real. This is annoying, but if you read the documentation (and they have documentation, being written by scientists), it's straightforward to convert them to CSVs
<SnoopJ>
thereby increasing the level of cursedness
<UmbralRaptop>
adding 19 megabytes of commas and removing 30 megabytes of spaces is perfectly reasonable
