raptop, I was thinking along similar lines during the trip I was on when you sent me that speculative map of English names. Anglicized names for places in Ireland are interesting contrasted with their Irish names
<SnoopJ>
!wpn -add:adj inconel
<galois>
Added adj ''
<SnoopJ>
uh
<SnoopJ>
!wpn -del:adj inconel
<galois>
Deleted adj ''
<SnoopJ>
iconel → inconel IIRC, unless there are two trade names for it
<SnoopJ>
I guess Dublin is a pretty prominent example since the anglo name is taken from Duibhlinn ("black pool") but the formal name is Baile Átha Cliath ("town of the hurdled ford")
<SnoopJ>
also: 'Baile' vs. 'Béal' which seem to share an anglicization (bally-/balli-) more often than they don't
<SnoopJ>
there's a lovely (and recently established) museum in Ballina (Béal an Átha) that we visited that had a great collection of maps along with some video content about the etymology of place names, although I'm not sure if the latter is available online anywhere. anyway, place names! \o/
