<Iskierka>
just let magic smoke out of sister's laptop
<Pinkbeast>
She's not, perhaps, overcome with joy?
<Iskierka>
it's an old one, the one she actually uses is way off with her in uni
<Iskierka>
I'm just impressed that managed to happen with (theoretically) no power supplied whatsoever
<Pinkbeast>
What happened?
<UmbralRaptop>
o_O
<Iskierka>
my own laptop's screen stopped responding this weekend. bought a new cable from ebay, still not working. noticed sister's laptop has a (phsyically) compatible connector on the panel - and they're completely different brands both using eDP, so you'd think electrical compatibility too. Plugged that into own laptop - before even pressing power button, sparks flaring off 6-pin components labelled D01 and D02
<Iskierka>
I should clarify, different brands of screen to manufacturer and the panel manufacturer probably wants to just make one controller. should be easier to change the cable wiring than the PCB
<Iskierka>
I imagine the components probably took the load of that and the cable's probably still fine to try with another screen?
<Pinkbeast>
It was half an hour later that Iskierka came back with no eyebrows
<Iskierka>
unfortunately I don't get another screen to try with until thursday

I've been bashing on my Pi but so far no smoke has escaped
<Iskierka>
have you tried plugging everything in wrogn?
<Pinkbeast>
Only inasmuch as is conventionally done with USB cables
<Pinkbeast>
I got it to run a Crawl server for complicated reasons & have slightly procrastinated it for weeks
