<Tank2333> Hi

<Pinkbeast> ho
<NomalRaptor> So, I guess the Brexit deal did not spark joy?
<Pinkbeast> Well, it's dismal, it's better than no deal, if May's deal imploding leads to staying in, hooray; if it leads to no deal, sigh.
<Pinkbeast> Fear of no deal is essentially May's sole bargaining point, I think.
<Pinkbeast> It's not clear there is a parliamentary majority for _any_ of those three things, which is awkward given that we get no deal by default.
<Pinkbeast> I _hope_ there's a parliamentary majority for a second referendum which, correctly worded, is a way of calling the whole thing off.
<Tank2333> Does ni deal mean a hard border in irland?
<Tank2333> Ni=a
<Tank2333> No deal i mean
<Pinkbeast> Yes, one of the many reasons it's catastrophically bad.
<NomalRaptor> I'd comment on how silly it is, but *gestures at the shutdown*
<Pinkbeast> I would guess it would also mean NI joining the Republic, which... well, that wouldn't be so bad (from the selfish point of view of the UK)
<Tank2333> Dont they hate each other?
<Tank2333> Or is it more of a ireland/uk thing?
<Pinkbeast> NI is divided into unionists, who want to be part of the UK, and nationalists, who don't.
<Pinkbeast> To a first approximation these are, respectively, Protestants and Catholics.
<Pinkbeast> NI is part of the UK because it is the part of Ireland where unionists outnumbered nationalists at the partition of Ireland.
<Pinkbeast> However, if being part of the UK becomes a massively less attractive prospect, it seems likely that nationalists might be in the majority in NI.
<Pinkbeast> Whatever happens to NI it will continue to be a horrible bleeding ulcer, especially if there is violence following the breakdown of the Good Friday Agreement, which is why (from the selfish POV of the UK) it becoming ROI's problem would be good. :-/
<Pinkbeast> Oh, the fourth possibility is a still softer withdrawal, effectively putting us in the position of being an EU member without MEPs, which would be bad (obviously) but not as bad as May's deal and perhaps we could just go back in in a few years when more gammon has died off.
