UmbralRaptop changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Διόφαντος. We currently target 1.3.1, and 1.4.x. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly…

🔪 the third dimension
<novasilisko>
i agree
<novasilisko>
i was kinda thinking maybe it would be possible to turn it into a 2 dimensional problem
<novasilisko>
like, sweep an ellipse along one axis of the ellipsoid and get the closest point of all the points you sweep through
<novasilisko>
but, i dunno how you take an ellipsoid and get a slice of it, which might be an even harder problem

Assuming simple prolate or oblate spheroids that are known to be ellipses rotated about an axis, it should be 2D automagically.
<novasilisko>
yeah
<novasilisko>
i suppose, if i absolutely had to, i could settle for oblate spheroids
<novasilisko>
all planets are oblate spheroids, but we only know of a few things that are scalene

if i can find a simple elegant way to do this that can just be written in a few lines, i'm publishing a fucking paper :v
