UmbralRaptor, I only today realized that 国 is basically ロ+王 but uhhhhh that makes a LOT OF SENSE
<UmbralRaptor>
Put your king in a box
<SnoopJeDi>
It's an alarmingly concise way to express the idea of "country"
<UmbralRaptor>
heh, sometimes the language is nice like that
<SnoopJeDi>
"here's a king and here's the boundary that is associated with same"
<SnoopJeDi>
UmbralRaptor, well the thing that led me to realize this was discussing 米 with someone else because I didn't realize it could represent American-ness until I bumped into it for some reason earlier

the person I talked about it with implied that it's a way to indicate a wealthy country, but I'm not exactly convinced because there are other words that use 米 to refer to a place. The use of the kanji itself is maybe tied to spelling アメリカ as 亜米利加 ?
<SnoopJeDi>
I haven't found a terribly useful English-language reference for this kind of etymological information yet heh
<SnoopJeDi>
jisho + wiktionary has served well enough, especially considering how few kanji I have learned, most of my inquiries are very incidental
<SnoopJeDi>
although the Kanji Study app on android has a lovely decomposition feature that shows kanji as binary (always I think?) trees of components
<UmbralRaptor>
hm
* UmbralRaptor
should look into that
<SnoopJeDi>
it has 100 kanji + kana + radicals in the free version, and it has another...9 stages or so, I think?
<SnoopJeDi>
it also shows stroke order and even has a pretty good facility for testing your handwriting, not that this is anywhere near in-scope for my current investigations
<SnoopJeDi>
seems like wanikani is maybe the de facto name in digital study at the moment
<UmbralRaptor>
It certainly seems popular on the bad bird website
<SnoopJeDi>
indeed! that's how I discovered it, I guess when Fiora was just getting started?
<SnoopJeDi>
or it seemed like it at the time anyway
<SnoopJeDi>
it's kinda hard to tell since she is moving at a frightening pace
<SnoopJeDi>
(AFAICT)
<UmbralRaptor>
Probably. Also, I think she's able to do full time (ish) studying
<SnoopJeDi>
this is true
<SnoopJeDi>
I think being exposed to wanikani that was was what helped me get over "oh gosh kanji seem so complicated" and start prodding at the concept a bit

<WeylandsWings>
UmbralRaptor: so it dimmed in the visible wavelengths but kept its overall power output the same?
<WeylandsWings>
or just that it kept its NIR/SWIR/MWIR/SLWIR the same?
<UmbralRaptor>
Dimmed in visible (and out to Z band?), but not in the rest of IR, I think
* UmbralRaptor
blames dust
<WeylandsWings>
big dust cloud
<WeylandsWings>
also is this in line with previous dimmings now? and what about the periodicityof previous dimmings
<UmbralRaptor>
the normal period is long (400+ days?)
<UmbralRaptor>
The wavelength ranges don't seem to overlap, depending on how wide the 1024 nm and 1.2 μm filters are
* UmbralRaptor
wonders if Betelgeuse puts out AGB levels of dust
<WeylandsWings>
AGB?
<galois>
AGB: Asymptotic Giant Branch
<WeylandsWings>
i need galois at work for all the acronyms
<UmbralRaptor>
heh
<WeylandsWings>
you think i am joking
<SnoopJeDi>
if you can put them in a JSON file in the format {"ACR": "meaning"} I will import them tbh
<SnoopJeDi>
or anything that's easily editable into same
<SnoopJeDi>
I never bothered scraping acronyms when I originally implemented it, I knew the ones this channel would want aren't going to be on a lot of lists I'd find anyway :)

"This mural depicts aspects of electromagnetism, with a large spherical object in space generating a magnetic field around it; like metal filings responding to a magnet, particles are affected by this field and show it’s flow. Below this, two transverse waves run along a wire on the wall, working with what was already present in the building. This mural represents collaboration with past and present and with its rich c
