<mofh> mlbaker: ^
<mlbaker> Bohm et al, 'The Geometric Phase in Quantum Systems: ...'
<UmbralRaptor> hm
<mlbaker> is the one i was referring to in that post
<mlbaker> but uh
<mlbaker> i have a list lol
* UmbralRaptor was eggspecting GR, not QM >_>
<mlbaker> (this isn't even all of them)
<mlbaker> to be fair, "actually explains the conceptual foundations rather than conceals it in pages and pages of wordless, breathless indices" is a fairly small niche in the physics literature...
<mlbaker> a staggering number of gauge theory books don't even contain the word "bundle"
<mlbaker> let alone "connection"
<mlbaker> rather it's just like hey let's add these counterterms to this lagrangian because why not
<mlbaker> oh yeah and let's slip in a few factors of i just so we can maintain our strange fetish for hermitian operators which don't even form a lie algebra
<mofh> I mean the strange fetish for Hermitian operators largely comes out of a strong desire for purely-real spectra
<mlbaker> *stares at page with 250000 index laden symbols* "Ah I see, it's a theory of parallel transport" -- said no one ever
<mofh> LOL
<mlbaker> yeah fair enough
<mofh> Yes that treatment really, *really* needs to die, I agree.
<mlbaker> but i mean, iR, R, what's the difference :P
<mofh> Touché :P
<mofh> (it's just a Wick-rotation,)
<mlbaker> *rotates candle*

<mofh> Can't wait until this high pressure system causing the Κdissipates tho.
<mofh> s/Κ/Ω/
<galois> mofh meant to say: Can't wait until this high pressure system causing the Ωdissipates tho.
<egg|cell|egg> The Kdissipates
<mofh> look I accidentally hit enter instead of backspace, also entering them in by raw codepoint is a shitty Greek input scheme
<egg|cell|egg> The Οδυσσέpates
<mofh> LOL
<mofh> it's an Ω block tho, like that's the term for it.
<egg|cell|egg> Should get a storm tonight
<mofh> ...when did météofrance's website become unusable for the purposes of forecasts? (I mean the answer is yesterday but still argh).
<mofh> tomorrow for Paris
<mofh> weekend for Lyon
<egg|cell|egg> Mofh: also, high pressure? It's still variable cm Hg iirc

<mofh> I mean yes, for one thing the center of the high is above *Sweden/Denmark*, we're just directly below it. For another thing, it's dissipating, which makes sense if storms are to be eggspected tonight.

<SnoopJeDi> You're en route now?
<mofh> yeah
<mofh> had my most painless gare de lyon eggsperience yet, train was on time, I didn't crash several parts of the station's systems by accident, etc.
<SnoopJeDi> huzzah!
<SnoopJeDi> You said "we," are you traveling with someone?
<mofh> I meant we as in the train itsself
<SnoopJeDi> oh okay
<mofh> TGV shunts onto a high-speed section somewhere just before Fontainebleau, goes from ~150km/h to ~300km/h in a few minutes.
<mofh> currently we're doing just shy of 300 (~295km/h)
<SnoopJeDi> It's so wild to me that the TGV is not lauded more
<SnoopJeDi> It was such a big deal even in the US when I was young. Mission Impossible has a whole damned climax set on the TGV!
<SnoopJeDi> I only rode it once I think when I visited though, since France wasn't much of a destination for us
<mofh> Yeah I'm kind of confused, esp. since it's distinctly the majority of high-speed rail in EU still I think.
<SnoopJeDi> Lyon → Marseille and then we switched trains IIRC
<SnoopJeDi> just enough time for a stroll down whatever main road is just outside the gare there
<mofh> Oh so like my most recent Rouen trip, literally just a stroll down the main road outside the gare there.
<mofh> (okay okay in my only other Rouen trip I basically didn't leave the gare, lol)
<SnoopJeDi> I recall being quite sad about it because of the homeless, I remember specifically passing a pregnant woman
<mofh> Yeah the situation in Paris is... frustratingly similar :/

<SnoopJeDi> mofh, holy shit! there is actually a recording of David Hilbert's speech where he said "Wir müssen wissen. Wir werden wissen" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbgAu_X2mm4

<SnoopJeDi> or rather, a rebroadcast of part of it

<mofh> holy shit
<SnoopJeDi> right?!
<SnoopJeDi> I just added his epitaph to my quotes file which is now A Thing That I'm Doing and in the process did a bit of poking at a biography of him, whence I discovered the speech itself was apparently recorded
<SnoopJeDi> oh no, sorry, this was the same recording, the radio broadcast
<SnoopJeDi> "As he raised his eyes from his paper and the technician snapped off the recording machine, he laughed. The record which he made of this last part of his speech at Konigsberg is still in existence. At the end, if one listens very carefully, he can hear Hilbert laugh."
