Iximeow: wait what how did you get any focus
<iximeow>
well, i've had startlingly poor focus for most of the time i've been astronomying
<iximeow>
but also, edges of the frame have always been questionable, i just didn't know how typical that is
<UmbralRaptop>
This gets into light magic
<UmbralRaptop>
(axiomatically it can't be dark magic)
<UmbralRaptop>
More seriously: maybe/it's complicated
<iximeow>
i've been mentally modeling it like a cone of focus extending from the rear cell, where the sensor is at one slice of that
<iximeow>
too far back and i get a smaller slice in the center where things are acceptably focused, falling off towards edges of the frame
<iximeow>
ok maybe more like a paraboloid
<UmbralRaptop>
kinda
<UmbralRaptop>
Image curves vs image planes, and a bunch of off-axis weirdness that I barely remember
<WeylandsWings>
The way it was explained to me is that the light front has the curvature of the last lens, which means to get perfectly flat images you need the back of the last lens to be flat which is hard to do and most people just accept that the edges will be slightly unfocused
<WeylandsWings>
Unless you really need the flatness and focus to be perfect where you put in more lenses or co the route of curved focal planes
