So if you heat things by compressing, can you cool by decompressing?

SilverFox, a refrigerator is a heat engine as well, yes
<SilverFox>
Hmmm, refrigerant
<SilverFox>
Although that is not the easiest to work with or get a hold of because of "muh environment" and "muh ozone layer"
<SnoopJeDi>
uh weird flex on not destroying the planet but it still works with a less compressible gas
<SnoopJeDi>
it's just that the efficiency is related to the compressibility and so someone figured how to make it really good, but the principle is the same as you learn in any introductory thermodynamics course. The size of the cycle can just be expanded with careful choice of gas.

Yay for matplotlib having a canned box and whiskers plot that you can just throw a list of 1D arrays at
<raptop>
(despite the name, this does not generate boxy cats)

SnoopJeDi: SilverFox: just use HFO-1234yf
<whitequark>
it's nearly harmless when released to atmosphere
<whitequark>
HFO-1234ze is even better but I think it's even harder to obtain for now
<whitequark>
mostly just expensive

whitequark, what's the easiest refrigerant I can get a hold of?
<SilverFox>
Maybe i should take a part an air conditioner?
<raptop>
aaaa
<raptop>
non-helpful answer: both ammonia and propane are used as refrigerants
<SilverFox>
Yeah thats true
<whitequark>
lots of people use propane
<whitequark>
you can refill R134a systems with propane if you don't care about the flammability
<whitequark>
aircon: nah, it's hard to reclaim the gas from an aircon
<whitequark>
and aircon refrigerants are also all super high working pressure ones
<SnoopJeDi>
spicy HVAC
<raptop>
It's all fun and games until you need to adjust the circulation to avoid exposing people to nitrogen-16
<whitequark>
fun fact: R134a systems with propane become way more efficient
<whitequark>
the COP shoots through the roof
<WeylandsWings>
SilverFox: Propane and Methane are decent refrigerants
