<iximeow>
sigh
<iximeow>
mystery solved
<iximeow>
i had experimented with some settings (significantly lower than normal gain) and misattributed some good results to very low gain. turns out the very good results were not at very low gain, and i was trying to reproduce something i'd never actually seen before
<iximeow>
the still unanswered question: what weird mode does qhy put the mode in and why does it seem to have such a sharp cliff in electrons -> pixel readings...
<iximeow>
ah. aha. "reset" does not actually reset all settings, if you don't power cycle the camera

<iximeow>
there are two? three? readout modes supported by this sensor, power cycling the camera resets it to one mode, and the software i *didn't* write, which i use to get live images and focus, sets it to the other
<iximeow>
if i then use my software to record images (no live view, generally less cpu use, better on battery use), it does not set a readout mode explicitly
<iximeow>
this is how "gain 60 offset 10" gives me two wildly different kinds of images
<iximeow>
this also means i have about 5gb of crap images. yay

weird request (assuming good data): UBV colors of the two brightest stars inside M 57 (that is, the central star and the one a bit to the side. Both are ~mag 15-16 in several bands)
<umbralraptop>
hrm. That probably means a whole bunch of other data processing Fun
<iximeow>
i wonder how well i can image ultraviolet from the ground

U band actually predates the space age, so somewhat!
<iximeow>
alas, sensor design
<raptop>
hah
<iximeow>
the vendor reports 60% QE for 400nm though so there's hope for near-UV at least

So, moveDC is doing some surveys on what to focus on for tranist
<umbralraptop>
They define DC as purely the distract (~700 k) as opposed to the MSA (~6.2 M)
<umbralraptop>
And really, given the amount of cross-state traffic, they should be thinking about Montgomery county MD and Fairfax county VA (each ~1 M)
<SnoopJ>
Wonder how many of those folks would be using public transit at all
<SnoopJ>
south MD/north VA being pretty affluent I mean
<umbralraptop>
Probably quite a few, given all those dedicated bus routes to the Pentagon

I wonder if DC's height limits mean that density is highest in some areas outside the district proper?
