<VITAS>
would you calssify spacedock as addon?
<Thomas>
an addon for what?
* VITAS
is readint squads rules and thinks spacedock is a special case not covered
<VITAS>
-t +g
<Thomas>
spacedock is a website
<Thomas>
not an addon
<VITAS>
and a service
<Thomas>
it adds nothing to the game
<VITAS>
so it isnt affected in any way by squads rules unless its copyright related
<Thomas>
yes
<VITAS>
or when i use squads services for spacedock stuff e.g. the forum thread
<VITAS>
Not that i had any problems with squad at any point but i wished there was a guidbook like the addons ruleset i agreed with them on
<Thomas>
not quite. if you break their rules and dont say it in the thread, everything is ok
<VITAS>
so each side would exactly know whats allowed
<Thomas>
like minecraft: "dont make money with our stuff" -> 5 years later "well, we should enforce that at some point" :P
<VITAS>
the normal procedure is for someone (most likely a mod first) to approach me and tell me where he thinks a line has to be drawn
<VITAS>
but its mostly them requesting me to remove stuff and me doing it after my own procedures are followed
<VITAS>
but we never tested the limits and i dont want to so i dont know :)
<VITAS>
on the other hand: their addon and forums rules would make a nice ruleset for spacedock itself
<VITAS>
and its allready written (but would have to be changed froms quad/ksp to spacedock)
<VITAS>
another question: squad demands opensource but spacedock isnt am i correct?
<VITAS>
(at least im not aware of it)
<Thomas>
Squad demands opensource for binaries
<Thomas>
i.e stuff that can nuke your os if it wants to
<VITAS>
they say "code"
<VITAS>
so its all programming
<VITAS>
and yes that doesnt include graphics
<Thomas>
by that logic they would have to ban google drive etc
<VITAS>
not for services
<Thomas>
because I doubt that google drive or dropbox are open source
<VITAS>
for mods
<Thomas>
For mods yes
<Thomas>
I was still talking about spacedock :)
<VITAS>
they only state that you have to make the sources of your mod available
<VITAS>
and post a link to them on avery link to your mod on squads services
<VITAS>
what does spacedock have to do with googledrive?
<VITAS>
you correctly said that spacedock isnt a mod/addon
<Thomas>
ohh, I misunderstood your question
<Thomas>
"another question: squad demands opensource but spacedock isnt *opensource* am i correct?" was what I understood
<Thomas>
and replied based on that
<VITAS>
ah ok
<Thomas>
Yes, SpaceDock does not want source code
<VITAS>
should we want it?
<Thomas>
No
<VITAS>
i think its a political question
<VITAS>
but yes youre right i dont want to enforce things like that
<Thomas>
forcing source code release sounds so Free Software Foundation alike :P
<VITAS>
and it isnt freedom anymore
<VITAS>
its sort of socialism
<VITAS>
share or face the consequences
<VITAS>
but i do want to make it easy and beneficial to share
<VITAS>
so one idea would be to (one day) integrate gogs aka dev.spacedock.info into spacedock
<VITAS>
and to add meachanics where mod authors can find helpers more easily
<VITAS>
so still: github+ for mods
<Thomas>
has there ever been a serious interest to host mods for other games btw?
<VITAS>
the plus beeing easier usability for consumers and a way more social/promotional abilities
<VITAS>
there was some interrest fromt he factorio community
<VITAS>
but i blew it by not keeping the gameversions up to date
<VITAS>
but apart from that: i just didnt promote it/have other s promote it in other communitys that much
<VITAS>
i think i need a nice platform first so i can offer soemthing they can imidiatly use and see the benefits of
<VITAS>
and i wish for spacedock to last so ive to find other reasons for it to exist apart from ksp
<VITAS>
thasts why multigame support is so important to me
<Thomas>
Hmm, maybe we can get devs from communitys who want to use spacedock :P
<VITAS>
ksp authors mod other games too
<VITAS>
but for someone to use it for something else than ksp we have to make a serious offer
<VITAS>
aka have everythign in place to quickly support a game with more functions then other means of distribution and advertising do
<VITAS>
and we need peopel who are well known in those communities
<VITAS>
and what i want to promote SD even more is to get closer ties and integration with youtube, twitch,... so media content creators have a use for the site and a reason to promote it
<VITAS>
and thats where the linking of videos, streams and so on to mods (as lets play, review, ...) comes into play
