I appear to have machine whispering powers. I sat down at this totally unfamiliar spectrometer, hooked up a serial cable to it and opened it in screen, and had it working pretty much immediately.

I mean, it wasn't like it was alien hardware, the entire command set seems to consist of single letters and it returns helpful info with every command. It almost seems designed to be operated by a keyboard and console more than software.
