I'm going to get stabby if this is entirely focused on software devs living in San Fransisco.

... okay, it's at least a bit reassuring to note that steamstats increased minimum account cost by more than I've paid since I last checked; definitely overvaluing the humblebundle ones, I've not actually paid that much
<Iskierka>
also, Far Cry 5 is about christian terrorists taking over an american state and being the rebellion against the nutters
<Iskierka>
could this be coming at a better time?
<Pinkbeast>
Iskierka: I wouldn't say no to Sea Dogs only not ancient
<Pinkbeast>
I saw Black Flag but I think it's safe to say an Age of Sail game where you don't know or care where the wind is is perhaps a little too oversimplified for me :-)
<Iskierka>
"Golden age of piracy" in the indian ocean, is what they've said. Mentioned Brigandines and Frigates as playable ships - didn't see any three-decks but they might be all in europe
<Iskierka>
black flag did have the wind matter but it was non-essential. There's wind in this but in just clips it's not clear how much it matters - but I did notice a lot of their cool action shots were sailing downwind
<Pinkbeast>
Welp, you're not going to be sailing even a two-decker _as_ a pirate, so fair enough
<Pinkbeast>
Huh, I didn't notice it mattering at all (only seen O. playing it)
<Pinkbeast>
As Captain Treasure Boots says on the back, "It is the Golden Age of Piracy and you are a pirate. Good choice!"
<Iskierka>
Not hugely, but you do lose out going too close to wind, which was definitely lenient for a square-rigger
<Iskierka>
wouldn't be at all surprised if they were much more aggressive when it's not just a semi-optional part of an AC game and instead the whole point
<Pinkbeast>
Even Sea Dogs lets you crawl upwind. Naval Action prevents it but is a bit very generous with points of sailing
<Iskierka>
they do focus a lot on multiplayer but there's suggestions of PvE so there may be stuff for singleplayer also
<Pinkbeast>
Oh, god, rams, I'd forgotten the AC rams
<Iskierka>
oh yeah, third trailer on the end for the kraken
<Iskierka>
no idea what's gonna be happening with that but should be entertaining
<Pinkbeast>
Also, that "frigate" is a two-decker
<Iskierka>
were there not double-deckers called frigates at that time?
<Pinkbeast>
No (the count can be confused because only complete gundecks count)
<Pinkbeast>
The main oddity is that the American super-frigates are essentially the size and close in firepower to a third-rate (but they do still have one gundeck)
<Iskierka>
wikipedia is unhelpful for getting a general impression as most things it calls frigates don't have articles and the ones that do rarely mention the layout beyond overall size and guns
<Pinkbeast>
Oh, and the ships sink, of course they sink, David, should have seen that coming
<Pinkbeast>
(This could all be quite fun, I'm mostly griping because I like griping)
<Pinkbeast>
Ah, here we are boarding a ship that's ON FIRE, that seems like an excellent idea
<Iskierka>
I didn't say it would be *hugely* realistic. It is an ubisoft game :p
<Iskierka>
apparently the 1706 establishment 40-guns may be counted as frigates and have two decks of 20? Not everywhere clarifies what things are
<Pinkbeast>
I griped a lot harder about them sinking in Naval Action which _is_ ostensibly realistic
<Iskierka>
that would definitely be fair
<Pinkbeast>
I wouldn't be surprised if some very old two-deckers were taken as sort of nominally equivalent to frigates (although more interesting IMAO are the razees, where the top gundeck was cut off to produce a big frigate)
<Iskierka>
Not sure if I should be surprised that they were strong enough in pitch to not split like the titanic
<Pinkbeast>
Well, the structural members are mostly underneath all that
<Pinkbeast>
I guess you have found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_frigate_classes_of_the_Royal_Navy which I think suggests two-decked "frigates" after the Restoration and that usage lasting until the early C18th, where I'm stuck in Napoleonics where it's definitely single gundeck. So maybe it's not a misnomer in the game.
<Iskierka>
with the first trailer dating it 1721 that usage would probably be correct

I suspect they'd probably struggle with napoleonic era ships when people keep asking why the biggest ship their pirate could possibly have if they were the most absurdly successful one ever is like a fourth
<Iskierka>
"But I want fiiiiiirst"
<Pinkbeast>
Equally there's way bigger ships then but maybe that's less obvious :-)
<Pinkbeast>
Naval Action has this going on, where half a given battle can be Santissima Trinidads :-)
<Iskierka>
is it half because that's the napoleonic half and the english half is all victory?
<Pinkbeast>
There were at least >1 ships approximately like the Victory
