At 100 km there is very little aerobreaking. I'd have to make many passes to land like that.
<darsie>
How does the chute skin get 1400 K sitting on a 900 K pod?
<darsie>
So I need lifting reentry?
<stratochief>
Might be close, although if you're coming in ballistic, maybe not.
<stratochief>
What part(s) explode on re-entry, and at what altitude?
<darsie>
I could try a larger shield.
<stratochief>
I wouldn't expect the chute to get that hot if it's not exposed, could be weird heat capacity
<stratochief>
Lifting reentry helps with g forces, and spreading the heating out over a longer period. But it sounds like that might not be your problem
<darsie>
Altitude depends on reentry angle. The pod explodes first, usually, chute and antenna, too.
<darsie>
At 42 km the speed dropped from 400 m/s to 20 m/s almost instantly. Before the acceleration peaked slowly at 15 g and went down to 4 g or so.
<darsie>
This was only with the shield left.
<stratochief>
Odd for the other parts to heat above the temp of the shield, I think. I do know there are lunar rated heat shields and ones only rated for return from orbit
<stratochief>
To be honest, I don't know if I've ever tried to return an uncrewed thing from lunar speed
