the D- and L-prefixes in some cases (like in case of aldohexoses) don't correspond to optical activity at all

spectroscopy is fun!
<Ellied>
I (techincally) took the first data with the big thing tonight. It sucks because my photodiode circuit sucks, but at least I've proved it works
<Ellied>
turns out if you're running a cable like a meter across the table, it's good for the impedance of the analog signal it's carrying to be a *little* less than 10 Mohms.

SnoopJeDi: Didn't build it. It's a TRIAX, big research-grade thing that probably costs five times my annual income. I just figured out how to talk to it - its only software was designed for windows 3.1 and there really wasn't a lot of documentation, so it was a lot of guesswork and trial and error.
<Ellied>
it's a hell of a spectrometer, though. The resolution is down to single picometers.

Ellied, are you familiar with Applied Science? His videos are neat in general and he did a DIY Raman spectroscopy setup that I liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRrOdKW06sk

egg|cell|egg: no, it doesn't. maybe it should
<Ellied>
SnoopJeDi: cool, I'll check that out when I get a chance
<SnoopJeDi>
(other projects I've liked are homemade aerogel and viewing a decapped 555 IC in a custom electron microscope)
<SnoopJeDi>
the decapped 555 uhhh does not last long, but it's neat

<Iron_Spike> So hey, here's a thing I learned at the con this weekend. During a Q&A, an aspiring artist asked a Dark Horse panel: "Does drama = sales?"
<UmbralRaptor>
SnoopJeDi: hard to tell from the inside, but the rejections from the 2 programs I applied for (with my advisors encouragement) last fall and probable rejection from LSST data science fellowship…
<SnoopJeDi>
What field(s) are you interested in going forward?
<SnoopJeDi>
(I'd be happy to put you in touch with local astro folks, regardless)
<UmbralRaptor>
Exoplanets in general, possibly other time domain data. I'm sorta hesitant on extragalactic, given that the scales feel a bit abstract and I ultimately got nowhere with that morphology project.
<UmbralRaptor>
This might be in tension with eg: Hobby Eberly Telescope's primary project.

Just let me know if you want to speak to people who know more about our local business I suppose, UmbralRaptor, the astro grad students are all very friendly/helpful

Hm. I cannot actually point you to eggsoplanet groups; I don't know any.
<egg>
UmbralRaptor: at a phd level languages shouldn't be an issue
<e_14159>
On the other hand, I have good news on the language front: That won't be an issue.
<egg>
odd as that etymologically sounds, english is the linga franca
<e_14159>
In my office room, there's another German, an Indian, and a Pakistani. The latter speaks no German, and the Indian speaks okay German. I wouldn't consider that office language combination as unusual.
