UmbralRaptor changed the topic of #kspacademia to: https://gist.github.com/pdn4kd/164b9b85435d87afbec0c3a7e69d3e6d | Dogs are cats. Spiders are cat interferometers. | Космизм сегодня! | Document well, for tomorrow you may get mauled by a ネコバス. | <UmbralRaptor> … one of the other grad students just compared me to nomal O_o | <ferram4> I shall beat my problems to death with an engineer.

<MARACRaptor>
So, conference was probably more miss than hit (at selling myself)
<MARACRaptor>
But at least that silly fitting code senpai and I worked on is seeing some use.

heh
<UmbralRaptor>
Also some cool things on galaxies.

<GreeningGalaxy>
ah, I just re-found this dreadful "USB-to-RS-232" "adapter" I got at Micro Center for some reason
<GreeningGalaxy>
what it really is is a circuit board that you can plug into a USB port and use as a serial interface. It has a six-position 0.1" socket header that gives you serial with flow control at 5 or 3.3 volts. Not exactly RS-232 compatible.
<egg|zzz|egg>

* Qboid

<whitequark>
GreeningGalaxy: ueah people don't often understand what RS-232 is
<whitequark>
best bit: laptop builtin RS-232 ports
<whitequark>
which have ±5V signaling because capacitive inverters are easy but capacitive charge pumps are apparently too expensive to put there
<whitequark>
you need like A WHOLE TWO MORE CAPACITORS
<GreeningGalaxy>
this one isn't even ±5, it's 0-5
<whitequark>
]yes, I understood
<whitequark>
TTL levels
<GreeningGalaxy>
yeah
<GreeningGalaxy>
I got that you understood, I was just saying that because most of the machines around here could probably make do with ±5.
<GreeningGalaxy>
but not 0-5.
<whitequark>
right.
<whitequark>
but honestly I don't know when was the last time I wanted actual RS-232.
<whitequark>
it would probably be an impediment really.
<GreeningGalaxy>
we have a lot of old machines that use it in our department. They're a lot easier to get than comparable ones that have USB, and at least it's more common than GPIB
<GreeningGalaxy>
on computers that is
<GreeningGalaxy>
friggin everything has GPIB
<whitequark>
cats with GPIB. plant pots with GPIB
<GreeningGalaxy>
when you start undergrad physics, they install a GPIB port in the back of your neck
<GreeningGalaxy>
They would just put one in your computer, but IT won't allow it.
<GreeningGalaxy>
I would be a lot less annoyed at GPIB if the cables didn't cost like $90+
<GreeningGalaxy>
there are enough pins on a Raspberry Pi GPIO to emulate it. It might be fun to try.
<whitequark>
my scope uses GPIB over USB
<whitequark>
it's kind of nightmarish
<whitequark>
personally I'd make an adapter with a CP2102 and maybe a small FPGA
<whitequark>
if you can fit it into a GP4 then it'll be extremely cheap
<GreeningGalaxy>
for our porpoises, doing it with a Pi might be more valuable since you could automate data collection and even analysis from a single networked device strapped to the back of a machine.
<GreeningGalaxy>
The connectors are stupidly expensive, but if we don't need a ton of replugs it seems like it would be easy enough to 3D-print something that would fit into the port and pin everything out
<egg|zzz|egg>
<whitequark> cats with GPIB. <<< is that tuco?
<whitequark>
lol
