So... First test flight of my Falcon 9 / Atlas V hybrid rocket to launch Duna Sample Return components. Using FMRS to land the first stage with a boost back burn. So, where to start...
<APlayer>
In chronological order: 1) Boostback burn: The first stage started rolling uncontrollably when I noticed the fins where tweaked in the wrong direction. So much for roll control. 2) Landing: Control issues, SAS not available. Between manual attitude control and extreme precision suicide burning,
<APlayer>
I tumbled the booster upon landing, losing two landing legs and the main engine. 3) Second stage boost to orbit: Turns out my trajectory was suboptimal. Not enough fuel for a Duna insertion left, despite my calculations.
<APlayer>
4) Figured I may as well test the curiosity style EDL on Kerbin then: A steep reentry resulted in the heat shield clipping through the wheels, the wheels overheated and exploded. Upon parachute deployment, a large G-Force overstress ripped the craft in about a dozen pieces.
<APlayer>
That's the story. Anyone can spot a possible failure mode that has not occured? :P
