BenjaminK: Yes I was asking about drag
<BenjaminK>
ah
<BenjaminK>
@Sarbian | the drag value is not used anymore. Drag is computed from dragCube that are either generated from the model or set in the config

This should be all I need, I'll be able to find drag cubes in the part database now and apply the panther's drag cube to my replacement part (and figure out how badly it messed up the autogenerated drag cube)
<Lyneira>
Thanks Sarbian for the link and BenjaminK for notifying me :)

Thanks again, got the drag for the engine in a much better place now, comparable to the Panther near mach 1, gets somewhat lower drag at higher supersonic speeds though

Lyneira: what did you change in the end?
<Lyneira>
ve2dmn: I copied the autogenerated drag cube for my custom part into the part itself, then compared it to the drag cube of the Panther. I noticed the 4th triplet (backside of the engine) had a much lower drag coefficient (2nd number) due to pointy shape, so I changed my custom engine's drag coefficient to match the panther's. Then it had too little drag (due to slightly lower area perhaps), so I did some drag testing/comparison
<Lyneira>
and used those numbers to get the drag coefficient to the point where it matched the panther's drag in a real test at roughly mach 1
<ve2dmn>
so... wind tunnel testing basically
<Lyneira>
Turns out that when you go to mach 2 and beyond though, the new engine actually has less drag than the panther. Not sure why but I don't feel like just blindly copying the panther's drag cube either
<Lyneira>
And I feel the drag coefficient reduction on the backside is justified because in exchange I removed the bottom connection node, which would have otherwise allowed me to cheat on the engine's drag by clipping a nose cone inside the engine, as with rapiers
<Lyneira>
You can't really take advantage of the high speed drag reduction anyway because going 1000 m/s at sea level your engines will just explode after a minute or so
<Lyneira>
Even with the precoolers which do seem to help with heat temporarily
