egg changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Germain. We currently target 1.8.1, 1.9.1, 1.10.1, and 1.11.0. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

JustMozzie. — when using principia and rss time date thing are the planets in the correct positions when they start?
<discord-_>
DRVeyl. — I mean... are you asking if everyone just randomly assigned the planets a place to be?
<raptop>
egg assigns the planets to their proper locations

scimas. — Specifically the initial_state config file has all the data. The data itself is taken from JPL horizons system. Also rss time date doesn't do anything other than change the time display. You can have the planets in their 1950 location but tell rss time date to show a date in 2020 and it will happily show it.

Okay, granted there's a test that shows how Principia gets ☿'s orbit wrong...

beaver. — has any progress been made on a "automatic" station-keeping mod that works with Principia? I would be interested in contributing to helping develop something, if there is a work in progress
<discord-_>
Stonesmile. — There is no such work in progress
<discord-_>
beaver. — Lack of enough interest or just way too difficult? I can image there are some huge hurdles to getting something like that working in a way that makes sense
<discord-_>
Stonesmile. — Way too difficult, how do you define station keeping for an arbitrary orbit?
<discord-_>
Butcher. — It would need to be part of Principia to be robust I think.
<discord-_>
Butcher. — And there is not much appetite for that.
<discord-_>
Stonesmile. — If you come up with a way to do it, then that would likely be appreciated
<discord-_>
beaver. — Yeah that makes sense. Any tools out there that could create an alarm (or something) if the projected orbit from principia comes within X km from the surface of a body?
<discord-_>
beaver. — (or X km above the surface of a body)
<discord-_>
Butcher. — The orbit analysis can tell you if you will get within a certain distance

Sumguy. — I guess the way to do it would be to be able to do virtual burns from the tracking station, so you could at least do them one after another without a kajillion scene switches.
