egg changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Germain. We currently target 1.8.1, 1.9.1, 1.10.1, and 1.11.0. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

<discord-> Zeusbeer. — Gmat is kinda hard ngl
<discord-> Zeusbeer. — It probably works though, if you know how it works
<discord-> Zeusbeer. — With principia that is
<discord-> Zeusbeer. — I tried it, to no succes
<discord-> Zeusbeer. — Very little resources to properly learn the stuff
<discord-> leudaimon. — On a much more simple (newbie) mission planning question... what is the principia version of "having a craft in the lunar plane" to look for launch windows?
<discord-> egg. — well, you can always do that if you launch from Kourou, otherwise I think @Butcher or @Damien are those who have eggsperience here
<discord-> leudaimon. — yeah, I'm launching from a low latitude site (first time playing with principia, I'm not that masochistic). I was just thinking that with precession, whatever craft I place in the plane of the moon will drift away quite fast, no?
<discord-> (experimentalshells?). — not very quickly
<discord-> lpg. — to _look_ for launch windows, a craft in the plane of the ecliptic is still adequate
<discord-> egg. — the plane of the moon does not move that fast, you are talking about years
<discord-> egg. — if you stay years in your parking orbit, I have questions about your mission planning :D
<discord-> lpg. — and you really don't need much precision
<discord-> leudaimon. — not concerned about the actual mission, but rather the usual practice of just going back to a craft in the ecliptic/moon plane to look at future launch windows
<discord-> lpg. — Actually planning exactly when and how to launch the mission that needs better techniques. finding rough windows work perfectly fine with the usual trick, you just can't rely on "launch into the plane of the moon" as a shortcut

<discord-> lpg. — heck even "let krash put me in an equatorial orbit" works well enough for most targets
<discord-> leudaimon. — cool
<discord-> lpg. — Personally I plan exactly the inclination & LAN I'll end up taking (and corresponding dv needs), but it gets fiddly. krash into orbit, hyperedit into an inclination = my latitude, then rotate my LAN around until the porkchop plot gives its best numbers (there's normally 2 possible LANs). Then I create a KAC alarm with all the relevant numbers
<discord-> egg. — Wouldn’t « launch into the plane of the moon » Just Work if you’re in Kourou like @leudaimon?
<discord-> lpg. — I was speaking generally. from sufficiently low latitudes, yes
<discord-> lpg. — but "enter VAB then krash into orbit" vs "enter tracking station then go to vessel" is essentially as painful in terms of scene switches, so I don't see much value in using a dedicated "real" probe to do it
<discord-> Butcher. — For launch windows I use twp.
<discord-> Butcher. — For actual launching I use a lambert solver to give me a suitable parking orbit.
