egg changed the topic of #principia to: Logs: https://esper.irclog.whitequark.org/principia | <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly…

⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ Is there a guide on the Principia wiki that goes into detail over the orbit analysis thing? I’m aware y’all talked about it a lot in here the other day, but I’m curious if there’s an official “tutorial”
<queqiao->
⟨goblijn22⟩ 17km/s for geo is prob overkill but i did it on accident
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ What’s the best way to get a “good” geostationary orbit that doesn’t move around over long timeframes? I don’t really care if it moves around a bit day to day, so long as over the course of a year it’s average position doesn’t change all that much
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ Here's my current orbit, with the analyzer open. But I'm struggling to understand it
<queqiao->
⟨Al₂Me₆⟩ You don't. There are only two stable longitudes.
<queqiao->
⟨egg⟩ > What’s the best way to get a “good” geostationary orbit that doesn’t move around over long timeframes?Moving to India or Mexico.

> 2024011112-JuliaHave you considered updating Principia?
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ No. I generally don’t update things because they usually break my save. Many of my previous RP-1 saves broke after updating.
<queqiao->
My saves are held together by duct tape and super glue lmao
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ It might be fine to update Principia now that I think of it, it probably won’t break anything like updating RP-1 did
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ +(I also don’t keep up to date for updates to things, unless I’m specifically waiting for an update)
<queqiao->
⟨egg⟩ Principia retains save compatibility back to Cardano, in 2017.
<queqiao->
Note that we do not provide support for old versions; we will actively ignore any bug reports or feedback from users who are not on the latest version.
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ I’ll probably update it then, since it probably won’t break anything. Thanks
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ Anyway, if I’m understanding this correctly, satellites in GEO will slowly start to migrate towards these locations? How would I figure out how long it takes the orbit to move say 5 degrees East/West, or how far it drifts in a year? That would be quite helpful so I can perform a correction burn every once in a while, rather than station keeping constantly
<queqiao->
⟨egg⟩ Look at the fields "Longitude of equatorial crossings of rev. #" / "Ascending pass" and "Descending pass".
<queqiao->
⟨egg⟩ This tells you that over the 415 day period being analysed, the longitude varies by 49° either side of 280°.
<queqiao->
⟨egg⟩ 280° would be 80° W, so I am guessing you are actually oscillating wildly about the 105° W point
<queqiao->
⟨Rad - LR-87 fanatic⟩ Alright, thank you
