<Bart[m]> lol
<VITAS[m]> I hope winter will be as extreme as this summer
<VITAS[m]> with loads of snow (nun the right places)
<VITAS[m]> in
<VITAS[m]> im currently buying winter outdoor gear
<VITAS[m]> surprisingly low priced atm :D
<Bart[m]> heheh
<Bart[m]> I bought some last week, sadly not discounted 😒
<Bart[m]> Probably due to the entire "northface" label on it.
<VITAS[m]> im in the north and i have a face...
<VITAS[m]> so do you (i hope)
<VITAS[m]> no im not that big of a northface fan
<VITAS[m]> im after another expedition tent
<Bart[m]> I've had pretty good experiences with their clothing.
<VITAS[m]> and a valandre sleeping bag
<Bart[m]> So far northface rain coats are the only ones that stood up to getting caught in a monsoon on a mountain top.
<VITAS[m]> i buy them if theyre good but not because of the brand
<Bart[m]> Well, stood up as in kept me dry for reasonably long in those conditions, that's a losing fight.
<Bart[m]> I buy them because they're good.
<Bart[m]> Bought the first raincoat because it was discounted, bought more due to being happy with it.
<VITAS[m]> ive currently a mix of patagonia, that unpronouncable cnadian brand, Outdoor research and ice breaker
<Bart[m]> Also like how I can swap out the inner layers on the jackets.
<VITAS[m]> im fat so i need boxier cuts
<Bart[m]> My issue is that my shoulders are disproportionally wide.
<VITAS[m]> thats why i cant wear most of the alpinist clothes
<VITAS[m]> i know that problem too
<VITAS[m]> sleeping mats are a problem because of that
<Bart[m]> It's a side effect from going sailing so much at a young age I think.
<VITAS[m]> my arms dont want to stay on them
<VITAS[m]> i think its genetic
<Bart[m]> Dunno, my father and mother don't have it.
<VITAS[m]> at least i had that shoulder thing even without sports
<Bart[m]> The only one in my family who also had that issue somewhat was my grandfather at my father's side.
<VITAS[m]> i remember my sisters first BF constantly running to the gym
<Bart[m]> But not nearly as much as me.
<VITAS[m]> and i thought what a poser.
<VITAS[m]> i later learned he envyed my wide shoulders
<VITAS[m]> :D
<Bart[m]> heheh, going to the gym at an early age is stupid, it actually stunts your growth.
<VITAS[m]> i dont like the idea of doing work in a closed room just to burn calories and form muscels
<VITAS[m]> i prefer sports where i can be outside or do interresting things
<Bart[m]> I wish I could still go climbing 😦
<Bart[m]> My legs simply won't allow it, grrrrrr
<Bart[m]> curses the stress fractures in his shins
<VITAS[m]> im to fat to do that
<VITAS[m]> im more about wandering arround aimlessly and sleeping outdoors
<VITAS[m]> soemtimes up a mountain sometimes on the flat
<VITAS[m]> with skies, on foot, bicycle, snowshoes,...
<VITAS[m]> then i take meaningless pictures of nature

<Bart[m]> I've seen the Mont Blanc from the top of a nearby peak, heheh.
<Bart[m]> Took a lot of training to get there.
<VITAS[m]> ive seen the eifel tower from le tour
<Bart[m]> The idea of having to do it again is, exhausting 😦
<VITAS[m]> or what that skyscraper is called
<Bart[m]> No idea where I found the strength for that climb.
<VITAS[m]> because there was a german on top and you wanted to argue with him?
<VITAS[m]> ;>
<VITAS[m]> hmm no setup fees in my local datacenter atm
<VITAS[m]> i could get larger ssds by moving server again
<VITAS[m]> but moving... :/
<Bart[m]> Does the monthly fee increase with larger SSDs?
<VITAS[m]> they have fixed systems
<VITAS[m]> or you have to pay for the ability to customize the hw
<VITAS[m]> my SSDs are 500GB right now and newer offers have 1TB
<VITAS[m]> its tight right now so i would love that
<VITAS[m]> but the prospect of moving erything again kills my motivation
<VITAS[m]> another option would be to have two systems one with magentic drives and one with flash
<VITAS[m]> but i would have to pay 10€ more and have two slower systems
<Bart[m]> Last server I had in a datacentre I was allowed to go in there myself to adjust the hardware, but it was our own server
<VITAS[m]> yes at work thats normal (and part of my jobs)
<VITAS[m]> but buying my own hw and sticking it into a DC would be way more expensive than renting it
<VITAS[m]> if it breaks others have to fix it
<Bart[m]> Ah, we got old company servers for free.
<VITAS[m]> yes but those are msotly crap
<VITAS[m]> and theres a reason they get thrown out after a fixed period
<VITAS[m]> if it where for my private amusement i would be ok
<VITAS[m]> but stuff liek spacedock is more important to me
<VITAS[m]> (even if it doesnt even cover the server bills anymore)
<Bart[m]> Ah, we actually had decent hardware.
<VITAS[m]> i mostly get one that is over 4 years old because its written of by then
<VITAS[m]> and i dont trust fans and drives that ran 24/7 for over 4 years
<Bart[m]> Depends what you do with them at that point.
<VITAS[m]> thats why im gave them away
<Bart[m]> Drives we had to get ourselves, they crushed those.
<VITAS[m]> ....to private me if i woudl want them
<Bart[m]> Heheh
<Bart[m]> I still have a quad xeon 3 GHz somewhere on the attic.
<VITAS[m]> i threw all servers out at some point
<Bart[m]> That thing is still a monster for simulations, even with its 10+ years of age.
<VITAS[m]> all i have is a dual pentium because nsotalgia
<VITAS[m]> i could have gotten two full racks of HP servers 4 years old with Disk enclosures full of 1TB disks and switches 1 year ago
<VITAS[m]> but what to do with them?
<Bart[m]> Get the disks
<VITAS[m]> i cant sell them because that i cant allow private me
<Bart[m]> Put them in a high redundancy RAID config in a NAS.
<VITAS[m]> they are 2.5" sas
<VITAS[m]> and who pys electricity?
<VITAS[m]> pays
<Bart[m]> Don't the newer SAS disks also work on regular SATA controllers?
<VITAS[m]> yes they might but still. i would need the enclosure to run it
<VITAS[m]> i got a bunch of 8TB disks instead
<Bart[m]> Well yeah, 1TB HDDs are like what, 80 bucks a piece new?
<VITAS[m]> the point beeing: i dont have the money or cooling to run racks of stuff
<VITAS[m]> :D
<Bart[m]> What we did with old hardware at work was clear the HDDs and hand it to local schools.
<VITAS[m]> i suggested the same
<Bart[m]> We outfitted a few schools' new computer class rooms.
<VITAS[m]> i left that job before that happend
<VITAS[m]> they most likely shredded the hw
<Bart[m]> And since it went to a school the university was 100% ok with us not following the normal disposal procedure.
<VITAS[m]> because churce is like that
<VITAS[m]> churche
<VITAS[m]> -e
<Bart[m]> They only requested that administration computers had their HDDs removed.
<VITAS[m]> they are the most unchristian bunch youll find
<VITAS[m]> lets see if that works
<Bart[m]> But our 3 year old trash was still plenty for a bunch of elementary school students.
<VITAS[m]> yes there are many institutions i would have loved to give stuff to
<Bart[m]> The official policy is that it was sent to central storage, where it would remain until someone requested it or it was 8+ years old.
<Bart[m]> The main difficulty was making the tracking IDs disappear of the books, heh.
<Bart[m]> We also donated a couple of servers to opensource projects.
<Bart[m]> But that was a bit more shady I must admit.
<Bart[m]> It was easier to donate them to ourselves and label them as broken/handed off with industrial waste.
<VITAS[m]> thats normal
<Bart[m]> Shipping servers is a bit too expensive to do under the radar.
<Bart[m]> A €300 shipping bill goes above the discretionary budget for shipping and gets highlighted.
<Bart[m]> So unless if they paid for it themselves or picked them up we couldn't do it 😦
<Bart[m]> Which was a bit sad, since we often disposed of old departmental "junk" that had run in ideal conditions.
<Bart[m]> (We ran the servers inside the cleanroom)
