Just to much work is all
<VITAS[m]>
And a new avatar
<AllisTauri[m]>
What? Where?
<VITAS[m]>
didnt you have a pic with hat?
<VITAS[m]>
would be a shame for all your work not to go into prod. so im reliefed that youre only busy
<AllisTauri[m]>
I do on discord and github and on the forums. Here I just choose a more recent one
<VITAS[m]>
ah ok. i know the bridge synces avatars too so that would be it
<AllisTauri[m]>
Well, everything of value is either merged or in PRs. And continuing refactoring may be incorporated anytime.

That's the hat for you)
<VITAS[m]>
ive to fix SD2 and we can think about public beta testing once you and the rest of the gang are happy to move to that step
<VITAS[m]>
im in no rush so you can do your thing and come back once you got time
<AllisTauri[m]>
Sure; I hope I'll have some time this weekend and the next, but beyond this is rather moved on to the next cycle.
<AllisTauri[m]>
And I'll be on vacation from 22d to 6th and will probably be out of touch.
<VITAS[m]>
THis is a marathon not a sprint
<VITAS[m]>
:)
<VITAS[m]>
And i would be thankfull if you drag others into this
<VITAS[m]>
If the site is reliable and usable we might even get a chance at replacing curse in the ingame menus.
aradapilot has joined #spacedock
<AllisTauri[m]>
Hm... I thought Curse is there because of some sort of a busyness deal with squad
<VITAS[m]>
yes but they got sold to amazon in the meantime
<VITAS[m]>
and squad sold ksp to take2
<VITAS[m]>
and ksp2 isnt ksp1
<VITAS[m]>
:)
<AllisTauri[m]>
Ah, you mean to be in KSP 2 menu?)
<VITAS[m]>
yes
<VITAS[m]>
the main copetitor could be steam workshop
<VITAS[m]>
i hope that everyone in the decision chain knows and values ckan & SD as a nicely working team
<AllisTauri[m]>
Pardon me for my scepticism, but I doubt any publisher would ever have deals with community-driven opensource anything, unless they plan to take over.
<VITAS[m]>
squad had their own hosting service and closed it
<AllisTauri[m]>
Before Curse, yea, I remember something like this around .24
<VITAS[m]>
thats why spacedock is called spacedock
<VITAS[m]>
because spaceport was the old one
<VITAS[m]>
atm im happy if they leave mod distribution as it is
<VITAS[m]>
but the space in the menu is definitly vacant
<VITAS[m]>
all they would have to do is link to a list of sites, integrate soemthing like ckan into ksp or link directly (they can change it with any update)
<AllisTauri[m]>
+1 to this
<AllisTauri[m]>
But I'm inherently suspicious about corporate stuff. Corporate always means closed sources one way or the other. Like with Android.
<VITAS[m]>
for any of that to happen spacedock and ckan need to be the alternative they benifit the most of
<VITAS[m]>
companies use steam workshop because its accepted and easy to implement
<VITAS[m]>
ckan&sd allready exist and are widely accepted
<VITAS[m]>
all they need is to be simple to implement, stable and what users (and more importantly mod authors) want to exist going forwards
<AllisTauri[m]>
And are easy to use, yes. And CKAN may also be decoupled from KSP
<AllisTauri[m]>
Hope you're right
<VITAS[m]>
yes i always wanted to support more games and have ckan as means of deployment
<VITAS[m]>
but i cant be dedicated to multiple communitys
<VITAS[m]>
we need multigame support anyways because of ksp2
<VITAS[m]>
i hope so too
<VITAS[m]>
im fearfull of take2 screwing up and me waking up to a redundant site i poured so many years into
<AllisTauri[m]>
Don't discard KSP 1
<AllisTauri[m]>
It'll be going years from now, unless KSP 2 team performs a miracle
<VITAS[m]>
yes suspense
<VITAS[m]>
thats the problem right now
<VITAS[m]>
i guess its the same for everyone invested in this
<VITAS[m]>
one thing we can be sure of is that in order to sell to as many people as possible they will try hard to give you reasons to upgrade
<VITAS[m]>
another question will be if they want to enter short upgrade cycles like EA did with yearly releases so people keep investing money
<VITAS[m]>
or if they see value in rgular DLC releases and selling to new users
<VITAS[m]>
(with mod makeing DLCs somewhat tricky to sell)
<AllisTauri[m]>
All my life I'm fighting the fear of commitment...
<AllisTauri[m]>
And, surprisingly, mostly winning
<VITAS[m]>
commitment as in getting emotionaly invested?
<VITAS[m]>
i wont ge broke if SD stops existing but i will be very sad.

<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
😮 ... mee too
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I dont even think my old potato computer will be able to *run* KSP2... so most likely I will be dedicated to KSP 1 for years to come...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I wonder how many people are in that boat?
<VITAS[m]>
I switch from blindly upgrading to upgrade my HW on demand
<VITAS[m]>
so untill i realy realy need something faster than a 970 gtx this one will stay
<VITAS[m]>
(i upgraded from a 680 just a year ago)
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
i'm on a 630M (laptop)... so no upgrade possible 😢
<VITAS[m]>
i think there will be a transitional period of about 1-2 years
<VITAS[m]>
where people will still play ksp1
<VITAS[m]>
but at some point most will have fast enough computers and updates to the game itself wills top
<VITAS[m]>
its like windows xp
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
yeah
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
so do you expect to keep all the KSP 1 stuff on SD as-is, and just add KSP2?
<VITAS[m]>
yes
<VITAS[m]>
my goal is to use multigame support to simply add ksp2
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
yeah.. Win7 peeps will be done in just a few months... Jan 2020
<VITAS[m]>
yes
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
thats what I figured
<VITAS[m]>
will be fun (and scary) to watch all those coroprates who didnt notice
<VITAS[m]>
i couldnt and cant be in other communities but i can host multiple games for the ksp one
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
luckily, tho i didnt think it was really worth it at the time... I bought into early Windows 8 for $10...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
so I nao have Win8.1 on my comp... I was dualboot with Win7, and mainly used Win7, till mebbe 6 mos ago
<VITAS[m]>
i wont (for as long as SD exists) not delete any mod (unless req by its author)
<VITAS[m]>
(or by the hosting rules)
<VITAS[m]>
so even if ksp1 is dead if SD is arround you will get mods for it
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
nice
<VITAS[m]>
because legacy is a thing we should preserve
<VITAS[m]>
i still have that kerbalstuff dump
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
heh... yeah... i am a mod ~~hoarder~~ collector, archivist...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I have 250~350GB of mod packages on my HDD.. including almost the whole of KerbalStuff... 😛
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
oh.. lol... great minds and all that... I think LGG has the whole KS archive, as well
<VITAS[m]>
i dont have thw whople but everything i got when it closed down
<VITAS[m]>
how much is the KS archive?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I have some missing stuff from it... magico13 had it all, and let me pull a lot from him to fill in holes... but he had to shut me down after awhile, cuz I was pulling too much bandwidth from him 😦
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I think complete, it was ~60GB
<VITAS[m]>
yes i got about that too
<VITAS[m]>
there was a short lived torrent
<VITAS[m]>
but it only contained free to use stuff not things where the license was unclear
<VITAS[m]>
do you want storage as central collector for mods?
<VITAS[m]>
i could hook you up with nextcloud storage
<VITAS[m]>
or alike
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
yup... thats where I initially got it from... I ended up deleting a lot of stuff i didnt like, or think i needed after i grabbed it all.. then regretted it, and tried gathering up that stuff after the torrent was shut down
<VITAS[m]>
i got the torrent and never deleted anything from it
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
hmm.. I could swear I got a bunch of the closed/ARR licensed stuff in mine vOv
<VITAS[m]>
as i said: lets dump everything in one place and then copy it
<VITAS[m]>
we shouldnt make it publicly accesible because of licensing but we and a select group of others could collect stuff there until noone carse about licenses anymore :)
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
hmm.. I have stuff from ALL over... ive been collecting from SD, Curse, Github only stuff, and unofficial recompiles and patch files and stuff from threads in the forums, too...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I havent seperated closed license stuff from everything else, but I've tried to copy comments of where/who stuff came from, in the zip names, or in cfg patches I've grabbed vOv
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
yeah.. I'd be up for it... I have a 12mbs upload... tho I'm llimited to monthly data of 100~120GB.. which i already pretty much hit every month 😛
<VITAS[m]>
would you copy everything to a nextcloud acc ill give you?
<VITAS[m]>
sec
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
oh, I also have tons of the source files... I grab those zips when ever I can
aradapilot has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
aradapilot has joined #spacedock
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I have been trying to sort out what I call "interim" releases, cuz HDD space... those releases that are sorta unnecessary, and between and before the final release that "works" with each version of KSP
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
ie keeping only the final/most updated release for each major version of KSP
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
but I still have most of those I've seperated out, on a different HDD... just in case I found I may want to keep them before I delete them all
<VITAS[m]>
it can only contain mods with no licensing issues
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
wait... so are those the actual mod zip packages, or just the metadata files for them?
<VITAS[m]>
we want to preserve all mods (non publicly)
<HebaruSan[m]>
Just the ZIP downloads
<HebaruSan[m]>
IF the license allows it
<VITAS[m]>
i think those are a subset of the torrent
<HebaruSan[m]>
Anything not on CKAN or with a non-redistributable license would be absent
AllisTauri[m]1 has quit [Quit: Client limit exceeded: 6]
<HebaruSan[m]>
They definitely would be only a subset. But it's a subset that you don't have to worry about re-archiving.
<VITAS[m]>
thats why im suggesting the central (private) storage. we can scrape together all mods from all sources in a curated central location
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
oh... I didnt kno CKAN had a place to host the actual release packages
<VITAS[m]>
and then each one having acc can make backups
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I have to tell you tho, my "repository" is kind of a mess right nao...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
i have lots of doubles...
<VITAS[m]>
thats your task: clean things up
<VITAS[m]>
im providing the space, the bandwidth and SDs mods
<VITAS[m]>
:)
<VITAS[m]>
(and the KS torrent)
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
it would be nice if we could dump everything into a central place, and then if multiple people wanted to go thru and clean up doubles/interim releases/sort out closed license stuff, and try to better document who everything came from... vOv
<VITAS[m]>
thats the idea
<VITAS[m]>
if you find others wanting to help im happy to give them acc too
<VITAS[m]>
you allready have one (see discord message)
<VITAS[m]>
and now im pronuncing you Head mod currator
<VITAS[m]>
:D
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
kewl... I'll try to get a start on uploading stuff I've gone thru...
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
i have a basic file naming convention I'm using... would files with spaces and special characters in the names be ok?
<VITAS[m]>
if you have enough local storage i would suggest using the nextcloud apop
<VITAS[m]>
app
<VITAS[m]>
and only syncing a folder between the server and you
<VITAS[m]>
you will always have a recent backup this way
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
idk.. I'd have to see how that works... I am around only 10~25GB of local storage left 😬
<VITAS[m]>
i set it up so that im sharing a folder from my cloud account with you. i can then share the same folder with others you drag into this
<VITAS[m]>
and also give them read only
<VITAS[m]>
thats 10GB for non shared folders
<VITAS[m]>
its unlimted for the KSP mod archive folder
<VITAS[m]>
ah ok for your local
<VITAS[m]>
you can also just drag and drop them into the browser
<VITAS[m]>
i will set up a new storage server as soon as the uplink is connected
<VITAS[m]>
you should keep a backup of all of your existing stuff till then
<VITAS[m]>
(i can provide georeplication after that)
<HebaruSan[m]>
May I suggest you guys take this to a private channel? The magical day of "nobody cares about licenses anymore" has not quite arrived yet
<VITAS[m]>
there should be one because this isnt SpaceDock talk anymore
<VITAS[m]>
i dont see licensing issues because we dont publish anything
<HebaruSan[m]>
Neither did users of Napster
<VITAS[m]>
they did
<HebaruSan[m]>
You're talking about a P2P network sharing ARR works
<VITAS[m]>
and rememebr im in germany and stuff is different here
<HebaruSan[m]>
Will all of these read only users that get invited also live in Germany?
<VITAS[m]>
place of court is the place of service provider
<VITAS[m]>
and thats me :)
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I'll try to poke into each mod before I upload, to filter out ARR as much as I can... that can be dealt with later
<VITAS[m]>
and in germany exists the right of "private copy"
<VITAS[m]>
im not allowed to make it available publicly but i can share it amongst my friends in a reasonable matter
DasSkelett[m] has joined #spacedock
<DasSkelett[m]>
But is a private cop still a private copy of you share it with others?
<VITAS[m]>
so if i give individual accounts to a limited amount of known people its private
<HebaruSan[m]>
The likely outcome of a court case is a sideshow to the point: Take this chat private. All I'm saying.
<VITAS[m]>
and im not allowed to sell it
<VITAS[m]>
youre right
<VITAS[m]>
:)
<VITAS[m]>
i wonder if discord to matrix querys work
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
I also have to filter out alpha/beta/prototype stuff I am currently privy to... so I already have to filter thru things that shouldnt be uploaded (at least yet)...
<VITAS[m]>
KineticSloth8StoneBlue: can you read my "test" direct chat msg?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
uhhh... vOv
<VITAS[m]>
thats a no?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
where would it be?
<VITAS[m]>
in discord
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
here in this channel?.. if so, yes
<VITAS[m]>
not the one where i send you the cloud acc data
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
yeah... nothing in DM after the cloud access message
<VITAS[m]>
so either irc, matrix or ive to set up another bridge
<VITAS[m]>
i dont want to use discord
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
wait... what are you trying to setup?.. a private channel?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
you can add another channel here in this discord server, and I think you can lock it/make it private
<VITAS[m]>
not discord
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
brb
<VITAS[m]>
so im running a matrix server (my primary IM server)
<VITAS[m]>
its bridging irc and discord to it
<VITAS[m]>
seems like the bridge doesnt do private messages
<VITAS[m]>
so i would have to create another bridge for another channel
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
hmmm.. I havent used irc in like 20yrs.. so I would have to relearn/refamiliarize my self with it... never done matrix either 😛
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
HebaruSan did you say that that ckan "repository" didnt inlcude ARR stuff?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
also, is it possible to scrape/grab all of it in batches?
<HebaruSan[m]>
Right, the bot only uploads mods with licenses that allow redistirbution
<HebaruSan[m]>
As for scraping, I don't know the capabilities of archive.org
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
ahh.. ok.. so I'd have to dig into possible methods/limits of scraping *them*... gotcha
<DasSkelett[m]>
Doesn't archive.org have some sort of torrent support?
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
hmm.. probably... i know a torrent link is usually listed on each file's page 🤔
<VITAS[m]>
there should be a dedicated channel to this topic on discord and matrrix now
<VITAS[m]>
irc will follow
<KineticSloth8StoneBlue[m]>
question is how to batch grab stuff
<VITAS[m]>
modarchiveproject
<VITAS[m]>
or map in short :)
<VITAS[m]>
map:52k.de for matrix
<VITAS[m]>
for discord: its in the "server" as channel
<VITAS[m]>
