bofh: re naming this thing with clusters of perturbed integrators forked off the main thing, aren't those ensembles?
<soundnfury>
egg|zzz|egg: if you need to call them something else for some reason (e.g. you've already used 'ensemble' in your namespace), maybe you could call them orchestras or choirs instead ;)
<egg|zzz|egg>
well if I have several flavours of those that is definitely a good idea
<egg|zzz|egg>
bofh: finding shadows close to the computed trajectory, and in some cases proving that an exact shadow exist by interval arithmetic!
<egg|zzz|egg>
see also more recent papers by Haynes on the subject
<bofh>
re: less-chaotic systems being *harder* to integrate
<egg|zzz|egg>
bofh: well, by the metric of "having a shadow"
<awang_>
Still not entirely sure what the email also implies
<awang_>
Think there was a typo, too?
<egg|zzz|egg>
if *anything* happens to the Kepler problem, you can notice it and see that the integration is incorrect
<egg|zzz|egg>
whereas in a chaotic system, unless you have a glitch (that's their technical term), there is likely an exact solution near whatever the integrator spitted out
<bofh>
that doesn't sound easier, that sounds harder. error detection in the Kepler problem is near-obvious whereas for the chaotic system you have... chaotic solutions that are valid but might not be what you want necessarily :P
<egg|zzz|egg>
bofh: but that's the thing, as far as getting a valid solution is concerned chaotic systems are easier
<egg|zzz|egg>
bofh: "what you want" in a chaotic system is a bit of a weird concept anyway

The error is too large for UTC ↔ TAI issues, maybe mean vs actual sun position?

<bofh>
Yeah, I think it's a bug in astropy but I legit have zero idea where.

i just got an email from my isp about using 85% of my data plan (?? residential internet data plan ??)
<iximeow>
after much concerned looking around (i've not intentionally downloaded that much Stuff) i think that site continues to download latest.jpg while open ;_;
<bofh>
iximeow: I think it does and it they're pretty large images (the res on GRB ABI is *impressive*).
<bofh>
you *might* want to not do that.

egg|zzz|egg: Have I mentioned that the Principia commit messages are great?
<egg|zzz|egg>
which ones
<awang>
The ones which would get you slapped by Linus if you tried to use them for kernel commit messages
<awang>
s/slapped/punched
<Qboid>
awang meant to say: The ones which would get you punched by Linus if you tried to use them for kernel commit messages
<egg|zzz|egg>
but which ones specifically
<egg|zzz|egg>
because I'm pretty sure that applies to all of them
<awang>
"moo"
<awang>
Or at least that's the one that happened to stick in my head while bisecting
<awang>
You do have 13 of those in the git logs, though, so that's not too helpful either
<tawny>
you can have something even better than lagrangian points in KSP tho
<tawny>
just park your spaceship a few degrees ahead of the mun's sphere of influence on the same orbit around kerbin and it'll stay in that spot relative to the mun just fine
<awang>
You know something is screwed up with kill -9 doesn't kill a process o_O
<tawny>
now how'd you do THAT

Well

s/crash/freeze
<Qboid>
awang meant to say: Chrome seems to like to freeze sometimes when I close a tab
<awang>
And apparently "freeze" really means "freeze", since I can't kill the process
