mofh: at ETHZ the attrition rate is about 50 % for the first year (and iirc the same for the second year), but then the admission into ETHZ is pretty lax (it's just the swiss matura)
<oeuf>
mofh: compare e.g. the french model of hard numerus clausus entrance exam then virtually no attrition
<oeuf>
(but then that entrance exam in FR is at the end of two years of preparatory classes, so it's sort of equivalent i suppose)

mofh: apparently it was getting a bit messy at ETHZ because the first year classes were getting too big, they tried holding lectures in two separate amphitheatres with one in videoconferences

at least the statue there is bronze and on a limestone pedestal, but still.

(like i'm pretty sure that recipie that we used called for too much sugar and on top of that i am 80% sure you added 2 tbsp extra on top of that)

mofh: i hear someone proposed titanium for the spire, that might look cute (and would be a lot lighter than the lead)
<egg|zz|egg>
mofh: alternatively his colleagues will become goats
<egg|zz|egg>
whichever one is more likely
<mofh>
Like Ti would make a lot of sense (and honestly *please* no more lead, that stuff is heavy, melts at low temperatures and is generally not something you really want around, plus I'm pretty sure measurable amounts of it *do* dissolve into soluble Pb salts, which are evil).
<mofh>
egg|zz|egg: ahh, that makes sense.
<egg|zz|egg>
mofh: well, they could keep lead on the roof (anyway you do want *some* weight, because the building is designed to have some weight on the vaulting, you can't just put something eggstremely light), esp. if the architectural contest thing is about the spire only
<egg|zz|egg>
but the spire bears on a smaller section that collapsed, so there redoing it in lead might not even be an option
<egg|zz|egg>
Ti will look different, but is kind of cute
