<SilverFox>
whitequark, should I implement hardware raytracing for the IRC client?
<B787_300>
Why does an IRC client need raytracing?
<SilverFox>
flex on the haters
<UmbralRaptop>
So you can have a /plössl command
<B787_300>
UmbralRaptop: at that point why not wave optics insread of geometric optics
<UmbralRaptop>
hrm
<SilverFox>
you ever seen realistic shadows on the text?
<B787_300>
SilverFox: no. Do I need to?
<SilverFox>
yes
<B787_300>
SilverFox: I mean I enjoy reading on my phone, but part of the benefit is not having to find an orientation where my shadow doent fall on the "page"

<UmbralRaptop>
yes. units are weird
<SilverFox>

<SilverFox>
is that a delta pressure?
<UmbralRaptop>
sr == steradian == radian²
<SilverFox>
like, accceleration for pressure
<UmbralRaptop>
That would make sense. Really I'm looking at power/area/wavelength
<SilverFox>
right because light has multiple wavelengths
<SilverFox>
and presumably the reds are lower power than the blues
<UmbralRaptop>
per photon, sure
<SilverFox>
and photons absorb colour
<SilverFox>
in their wavey-particle shenanigans
<SilverFox>
optical physics is fucked
<SilverFox>
im having a big brain moment here, is the colour transfer just energy transfer via momentum?
<UmbralRaptop>
I don't understand the question
<SilverFox>
hold on one sec
<SilverFox>
i only have so much data rate in my brain
* UmbralRaptop
goes with "any color not defined along the lines of B-V = +0.5, or Teff = 5500 K is fake"

<UmbralRaptop>
fr-CA because QC isn't a real country?
<SilverFox>
*bloc-quebecois dislikes this*
<SilverFox>
okay so my theory about light stuff
<UmbralRaptop>
go on
<SilverFox>
every object has a colour because of reasons, but colour is just a set wavelength in the spectrum of light, that is also tied to energy, and photons absorb this energy when they hit the thing because conservation of energy. This is why things get washed out or lose their colour with exposure of sunlight. all photons start out at the highest energy level, and then get subtracted from whatever surface they hit. a red surface is leaving it with the
<SilverFox>
lowest energy, blues are the highest
<SilverFox>
because really the object is every colour except the colour they emit
<SilverFox>
red surfaces absorb almost all the energy, leaving it with very little left over, thus the colour is from the lower end of the spectrum
<whitequark>
that sounds almost entirely incorrect
<SilverFox>
prolly is
<UmbralRaptop>
"color is just a set of wavelength" is pretty much correct. Just make sure to include intensities
<SilverFox>
yeah that's what i was forgetting
<SilverFox>
do photons collide with other photons?
<SilverFox>
or do they not because wave-particle shenanigans?
<UmbralRaptop>
They do, but unless you're doing HEP or something, it's negligible
<whitequark>
can we even achieve those energies?
<SilverFox>
also things in caves that aren't biological aren't bright because they dont have the energy to sustain the need for the coloured light, so they get the less intense colours because those require less energy to maintain
<SilverFox>
everything is like, states, set steps, like the electron positions
<UmbralRaptop>
eh, reflected colors get into all sorts of chemical things that can end up that way for other reasons
<UmbralRaptop>
whitequark: unsure, ask SnoopJeDi?
<SilverFox>
and our skin doesnt get washed out because we shed it
<whitequark>
SilverFox: "washing out" happens due to UV specifically
<SilverFox>
yeah that's just upper end of the spectrum
<whitequark>
no
<whitequark>
you can illuminate a compound with red light for all eternity and it won't go anywhere
<SilverFox>
how dare you disprove my theories with no mathematical basis

<SnoopJeDi>
whitequark, UmbralRaptop, SilverFox yes γγ is a thing, but it's not a dominant thing at present energies at e.g. LHC. The channel is significant enough that it contributes to the Higgs and other stuff, but if you wanted to target γγ you'd be doing crazy shit like https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.04469
<SnoopJeDi>
N.B. The proposed collider would be powered by (part of) a Dyson swarm constructed around the Sun, and efficient use of energy will be important to reduce the time needed to reach the desired number of collisions."
<SilverFox>
target what
<SnoopJeDi>
photon collisions
<SilverFox>
I dont speak nerd
<SnoopJeDi>
γγ means "photon hitting a photon"
<SnoopJeDi>
γγ → X would be two photons creating [something]
<SnoopJeDi>
oh I'm sorry I mis-spoke, the Higgs thing I'm thinking of is Higgs *decaying to* γγ
<SnoopJeDi>
But that paper gives you a sense for the scale anyway
<SilverFox>
yeah but you'd think with all the sunlight there'd be more collisions
<SilverFox>
especially off rocks or something
<SnoopJeDi>
SilverFox, so a "collision" isn't particularly interesting unless there's an *interaction*
<SilverFox>
that's subjective
<SnoopJeDi>
uh
<SnoopJeDi>
okay I guess, but we're talking about HEP here
<SnoopJeDi>
two photons passing through each other and having absolutely no influence on each other seems maybe a bit dull in context
<SnoopJeDi>
an alternative perspective is that the typical energy density you need is roughly what you'd find at the surface of last scattering when hadrons started forming
<SnoopJeDi>
~300,000 years after the big bang
<SilverFox>
dull is also subjective here
* UmbralRaptop
glitches. Wasn't that surface of last scattering only ~3000 K?
UmbralRaptor has joined #kspacademia
<SnoopJeDi>
you'd know better than I would, but remember we're talking about the *photon* energy
<SnoopJeDi>
it looks like maybe γγ is relevant to some supernovae interests though
<UmbralRaptor>
(Also, hadrons formed in first seconds to minutes)
<SnoopJeDi>
ah, my mistake
<SnoopJeDi>
(I don't much care about the pew-pew side of the machine, I care much more about vroom-vroom and even then)
