egg: re: transpose notation: anglo-saxon notation has predominated since that's what the papers use (also we usually care about conjugate-transpose anyway, which generally is denoted superscript *)
<mofh>
(but the symbol follows the matrix, it does not precede it, is presumably what you're wondering about, and yes it does).
<mofh>
granted, transpose as a prefix is honestly really confusing imho
<egg>
mofh: Is that in publications in English or in French though
<egg>
mofh: e.g., sh ch th is still the notation that gets taught in prépa and the like, so these notations still exist somewhere
<mofh>
egg: publications in English
<egg>
mofh: journals tend to be in English and will thus follow anglo-saxon usage, but it's interesting to see what usage is on random blackboards rather than just published material
<mofh>
That's a good question, like the grad students tend to follow the notation of the paper when discussing the results, but I'm not sure what I'd see in i.e. a random class.
<mofh>
(also there's the usual physics vs. mathematics linear algebra notation, which *does* subtly differ).
<mofh>
egg: like, I don't understand how math fucks that up, if you're semilinear according to physics then the riesz representation theorem makes sense syntactically, whereas if you do it in the other argument, it's needlessly awkward.
