<Greys> could be nice to have a mod or mode for another mod that adds construction techniques to the tech tree, that would take existing parts and augment their attributes
<Greys> such as you start with normal rivets, and all the tanks, wings, fuselages, and so on have greater drag; then at some point you upgrade and get a small but ubiquitous reduction in drag, and later there could be surface treatments that reduce friction or material upgrades that increase thermal tolerance, etc
<Greys> as well as the obvious reductions in material cost and weight

<Greys> ;wa 12v/1.6mA to ohms

<Greys> ... Omega?
<Greys> ;wa 12v/1mA to ohms

<Greys> Hyratel_ you got any time for my electronics nonsense?
<SilverFox> omega is the symbol for ohms isnt it?

<Greys> Hyratel I've got mostly this built, except the power is a 12v .5A wall wart, and I skipped out on the Rbase and Rload resistors; and I'm not certain what value the potentiometer is; it works but I'm not getting good control sensitivity on a PC fan, so I'd like to get a better pot so I can run the fan at a slower stable speed
VanDisaster has joined #kspmodders
<Hyratel_> Greys, yeah
<Hyratel_> Rload represents the Load itself
<Hyratel_> and you need Rbase to contrl the multiplier
<Greys> oh right
<Greys> the load is a fan, 12v, 240ish mA
<Hyratel_> transistors operate as current multiplying limit
<Hyratel_> thIbase * Gain = max
<Hyratel_> Ibase * Gain = Iloadmax
<Hyratel_> so this is not very well-suited to controlling a brushless fanmotor
<Hyratel_> you need a voltage controller not a current controller
<Hyratel_> if this was for a brushed motor it'd be fine
<Hyratel_> but a brushless motor is a logic device
<Hyratel_> a logic device with a dependent power device
<Greys> mmmkay, so trying to get a more suitable pot is barking up the wrong tree
<Hyratel_> you need either a PWM control or a voltage control
<Hyratel_> yeah - you need a FET-family transistor not a BJT
<Hyratel_> FETs operate as voltage devices
<Greys> I have access to mosfets
<Greys> is there a particular circuit design you'd recommend?
<Hyratel_> a BJT is a current limit multiplier, a FET is a proportional resistor
<Greys> BJT sounds more efficient, not that I'm hugely concerned about efficiency
<Greys> is there a particular component style, like the shape and look of it, that's more likely to be a BJT?
<Hyratel_> what's the application?
<Hyratel_> not really
<Greys> cooling my NAS
<Hyratel_> do you need proportionate control?
<Hyratel_> and what sorts of parts access do you have ; do you have access to perfboard or stripboard
<Greys> I need to be able to make it quieter
<Greys> I have some solderable breadboard I've been cutting up, and some boards with disconnected holes
<Greys> I've got the parts from a monitor, tv, microwave, and printer
<Hyratel_> do you have 12v and 5v rails both accessible in the NAS?
Hyratel_ is now known as Hyratel
fcbayerndm has joined #kspmodders
<Greys> I'm not messing with that, this is running on a separate wart
<Hyratel> dang
<Hyratel> because test 1 would be to run the fan off 5v instead of 12
<Greys> that's probably too slow
<Greys> I have an amount of control currently and too far from max the NAS starts seeing temps in the 120F range
<Hyratel> hmm
<Greys> the organization inside the unit is particularly bad and I need to abandon the case all together, just not ready to do that yet
<Hyratel> do you have a 555
<Hyratel> you can make a PWM drive with that
<Greys> the possibility exists
<Hyratel> how time-important is the project
<Hyratel> ie, can you wait for shipping on a 555
<Greys> not at all, current solution is stable, I just don't have the control sensitivity to accurately make it slower
<Greys> I even hotglued a 2" screw to the knob for more precision and that only helped a little
<Greys> plan 2 is to get a multiturn pot; but a better control method may be more accessible
<Hyratel> it might be a log pot
<Hyratel> for audio
<Greys> it looks pretty linear on my shitty analog multimeter taht doesn't cover the entire range
<Greys> so yea, could be
<Greys> I haven't found any 555s in my 'collection', but I did find a triac
<Greys> looks like I'm stuck for the time being

<Hyratel> Greys, measure across the ends and then put the wiper in the middle
<Hyratel> if it's not 50%, then it's a log pot
Wetmelon has quit [Ping timeout: 204 seconds]
<Greys> unfortunately my multimeter only goes to 1k, and it's definitely more than that
<Greys> I go to amazon, search for multimeters, try to find the price limit which is frequently just not there cuz reasons; but.... metric, or inch
<Greys> Hyratel, how do you feel about imperial multimeters?
<Hyratel> what
<Greys> I agree.
