<SilverFox> I wonder how possible it is to simulate a PCIe x1 lane with a raspi or arduino or something
<SilverFox> like, obviously not 4k gaming 120hz
<SilverFox> but, does it work, period
<r4m0n> I believe the minimum link speed for PCIe 1.0 is probably something like 2 orders of magnitude higher than the max GPIO speed of the RasPi
<SilverFox> right, but why is there a minimum speed?
<r4m0n> it can probably bitbang USB 1.0 low speed, but that's about it
<SilverFox> What about jury-rigging a PCIe to USB 2.0 thing?
<r4m0n> there ARE USB-PCIe adapters AFAIK
<SilverFox> I don't think I've found one
<SilverFox> I've looked before
<SilverFox> the USB cables that are attached to the mining risers are apparently not properly implemented, since it's supposed to go from riser to PCIe card or some shit
<SilverFox> but I guess you could figure out how that works and replicate it from a source USB port?
<SilverFox> is there a miniPCIE to PCIe x16 slot?
<r4m0n> miniPCIe is 4x IIRC
<r4m0n> but might be some crazy adapter
<SilverFox> okay, well a x16 slot with only x4 support or some shit, I just wanna plug a GPU in there
<SilverFox> if USB 2.0 can handle PCIe x4, then it can definitely handle x1 and that means you can use a pi for mining
<r4m0n> half of this is a USB 3.0 to PCIe
<SilverFox> that's what I was talking about before
<r4m0n> oops, this is PCI
<SilverFox> dunno if this is just straight USB to PCIe or if it's PCIe -> proprietary USB -> PCIe
<r4m0n> at least USB -> mini -> PCIe x16 exists
<SilverFox> see how we gonna do the male to male
<SilverFox> is it crossover or straight through?
<SilverFox> is this portuguese?
<r4m0n> the sites like to take the local language, even when I explicitly tell them not to
<r4m0n> anyway, the first connector and the last one plug into each other without issues
<SilverFox> right
<SilverFox> now comes the question on if it'll be recognized properly
<SilverFox> surely it's not as easy as plug and play
<r4m0n> might be, if there's enough power
<r4m0n> I'm pretty sure USB->PCIe bridge is a standard driver
<r4m0n> it'll likely perform like shit, though
<SilverFox> it's not meant to run games, it's meant for mining
<SilverFox> a base system can be a rather decent expense
<r4m0n> even so you still need some BW there. it's probably enough to run decently, and only suck at job changes
<SilverFox> yeah the job changes are where it's gonna suck
<r4m0n> the adapters might be expensive enough to buy a cheap mobo, though XD
<SilverFox> hmm, maybe
<r4m0n> space-wise, a pi running half a dozen GPUs sound awesome, though
<SilverFox> and power wise
<SilverFox> a mobo definitely takes much more power than a raspi
<SilverFox> and the power supply takes more power probably
<SilverFox> raspi is like, 10-12W
<r4m0n> a good one will take marginally more, though. I mean, you probably will be tossing 100~150W on each GPU anyway
<r4m0n> a good mobo on idle can do 10~20W
<SilverFox> right, but you'll have more power-room for the GPUs
<r4m0n> the Pi is pretty terrible power-wise, actually
<r4m0n> anyway, if you could grab an average mobo, stick a dozen GPUs on the native PCIe and another dozen on USBs...
<SilverFox> found this for the same price as a raspi 3+
<SilverFox> 2GB of LPDDR3 ram at 1600Mhz and a USB 3.0 hub
<SilverFox> although it consumes 15W
<r4m0n> I have one of their "notebooks". came with a bad keyboard, though :-/
<SilverFox> rip

<SilverFox> there is a leak for the GTX 1180
<SilverFox> I'm excited to see how well it performs
<r4m0n> there was a "leak" on april's fool, is this new?
<SilverFox> fair
<SilverFox> didnt realize the date on it
<r4m0n> the paper specs say something like 50% increase on the 1080
<SilverFox> 50% is rather excessive
<r4m0n> DDR6, about 50% extra cores
<SilverFox> 4 days ago
<r4m0n> and that's over the 1080, the 1080 Ti is of course closer
<SilverFox> right, and the titan closer than that
<r4m0n> yes, I'm reading the data from there
<r4m0n> think I'll wait for the 1180 Ti before ditching my 980 Ti
<SilverFox> Im curious to see how my 1060 will stack up
<SilverFox> my 1060 of course still does rather well, but upgrades for my VR experience are always welcome, since I'm nudging lower end
<r4m0n> a 1060 6GB is about as good as my 980 Ti
<SilverFox> ya sure?
<SilverFox> thought 970 was equivalent
<SilverFox> except for the extra 2.5GB of VRAM
Glass|phone has joined #kspmodders
<r4m0n> it outperforms it a bit on ETH mining, overclocked. mostly dure to memory speed
<r4m0n> overall, they are pretty close

<SilverFox> interesting
<r4m0n> I run the 980 Ti as my main GPU and passthrough a 1060 to a W10 VM
<SilverFox> However, I want to get some good peripherals before I really upgrade components, since I'm at this awkward point in my component specs where I could upgrade, but the money to upgrade is prohibitive
<SilverFox> your machine runs two GPUS?
<r4m0n> big machine XD
<SilverFox> nice
<SilverFox> I prefer smaller ones
<r4m0n> Ryzen 1800X, 4GHz OC, 64GB RAM
<SilverFox> I like having ballin shit in like, the formfactor of a xbox one
<r4m0n> built it about 1 year ago
GlsFrg|phone has quit [Ping timeout: 198 seconds]
<SilverFox> my pc right now is a cube
<SilverFox> looking to get one of those SFX mini things, whatever they're called
<r4m0n> anyway, I'd hold onto the 1060 for a while more, unless you start to really feel the pressure. mine can handle VR decently enough even on a VM
<SilverFox> yeah, like I said, mine is just fine for gaming and VR work, I'd prefer a 1070 but meh
<SilverFox> I'm at the awkward stage where I could upgrade, but the upgrades aren't particularly worth the money right now
<r4m0n> the 1060 has more OC headroom, if you aren't overclocking it, I'd recommend giving it a try
<r4m0n> should perform pretty close to a stock 1070
<SilverFox> I am, but it's also a mini 1060
<SilverFox> and it def reaches thermal throttle during VR
<r4m0n> yeah, it can get quite hot
<SilverFox> I smell smelly things when I get close to the case
<SilverFox> although that's probably the cables, since cable management is shit in such a tight space
<r4m0n> if you don't have particularly good airflow, it WILL cook your whole machine. those little cards are great heating elements
<SilverFox> indeed
<SilverFox> although that side of the cube is fine
<SilverFox> the 1180 is rumored to have a larger die size, which kinda sucks for my hopes of a mini
<SilverFox> and the 8-16GB of VRAM number throws me off
<r4m0n> just 1/3 larger, it shouldn't change the card size considerably
<SilverFox> i wonder if there's a 1080ti mini
<SilverFox> nope not really, but the lowest price 1080ti is 1,243$
<SilverFox> ~wa 1243$ to USD (nocache)
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: convert C$1243 (Canadian dollars) to US dollars: $974.07 (US dollars)
<SilverFox> pretty hefty
<SilverFox> ouch, 211mm
<SilverFox> not bad, but it might be a tight squeeze in my ITX systems
<SilverFox> this is the case I want
<SilverFox> yeah I know
<SilverFox> there's a really tiny gigabyte card
<r4m0n> that's a pretty cool case
<SilverFox> new one me thinks
<SilverFox> it supports up to 215mm GPUs
<r4m0n> so, pretty tight fit
<SilverFox> indeed
<SilverFox> which is why I like my smaller stuff
<SilverFox> I'd have to settle for a 1080
<SilverFox> although, I wonder what GPU pricing on amazon is like, if it's any better than newegg
<r4m0n> can go either way I think
<SilverFox> 4mm is not a lot of playroom for airflow
<SilverFox> ~wa 975USD to CAD (nocache)
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: convert $975 (US dollars) to Canadian dollars: C$1244.18 (Canadian dollars)
<SilverFox> same price, though idk if amazon charges taxes or not
<SilverFox> actually, I could prime it for 1,089.99
<SilverFox> and it can't be shipped to canada, so rip
<SilverFox> the thing with the 1060 though is you can't really change the voltages to it, which sucks for me cause I like undervolting to save on power consumption
<r4m0n> you can change the power limit, though
<SilverFox> yeahh
<SilverFox> also newegg sells an 8GB vram variant of a 1060
<r4m0n> that's an odd one
<SilverFox> indeed
<SilverFox> dunno if it's legit or what
<r4m0n> it's out of the main specs, but it should be doable with a custom board
<SilverFox> amazon doesn't charge me taxes based on my province, but newegg does, so certain things are better from amazon.com than newegg, but amazon.com has import duties
<SilverFox> amazon.com gives me a 1060 6GB mini from EVGA for 361.10, compared to the grand total of 476.84$ for a zotac mini
<SilverFox> ~wa 361.10USD to CAD (nocache)
<SilverFox> ??
<SilverFox> ;wa 361.10USD to CAD
<kmath> SilverFox: convert $361.10 (US dollars) to Canadian dollars: C$460.79 (Canadian dollars)
<SilverFox> so I save 10$ from going through amazon compared to newegg
<SilverFox> 16$ really
<r4m0n> messy XD
<SilverFox> ~wa stuff
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: : title->The Stuff, director->Larry Cohen, release date->June 14, 1985 (30 years 8 months ago), runtime->93 minutes (1 hour 33 minutes), writer->Larry Cohen, genres->horror -> comedy -> sci-fi -> mystery, MPAA rating->R
<SilverFox> k so it just didn't like the query or what?
<r4m0n> try again?
<SilverFox> ~wa 361.10USD to CAD (nocache)
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: convert $361.10 (US dollars) to Canadian dollars: C$460.79 (Canadian dollars)
<SilverFox> interesting
<r4m0n> guess the connection failed or something
<SilverFox> must've
<SilverFox> I'm trying to build a gaming pc for my gf
<SilverFox> she wants to play "all the games ever"
<SilverFox> because her laptop is so shit that she just doesn't even bother looking at games
<SilverFox> the skyreach 4 mini is like, 199$
<r4m0n> the "ever" part is the tricky one. I think a 1060 can handle most if not all games released so far at some capacity
<SilverFox> ~wa 199USD to CAD (nocache)
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: convert $199 (US dollars) to Canadian dollars: C$253.94 (Canadian dollars)
<SilverFox> so yeah, paying 254$ for a case is rather not fun
<r4m0n> indeed
<SilverFox> then you need the power supply, which for a 360W DC one is 75USD
<SilverFox> intel's new NUC though looks really good
<SilverFox> they sell the DC-DC power supply, but they don't sell like, an AC-DC brick
fcbayerndm has joined #kspmodders
<SilverFox> oof, the AC adapters are rather pricey too
<SilverFox> 107USD for a 330W power brick

<SilverFox> a 1070 would be great for Elite Dangerous VR stuff, I've been starting to get into ED since I bought it yesterday or two days ago
<SilverFox> it's hella neat putting on the rift and seeing planets and shit in VR
fcbayerndm has quit [Quit: fcbayerndm]
<r4m0n> ED is very pretty, I might go back to it now and then... too grindy for me, this damned thing of making everything eternal grinding MMOs
<SilverFox> I haven't played it much so cant' talk about how grindy it is, but I think I might enjoy it when I get the time to
<SilverFox> one thing I do want to do though is go to the black hole at the center of the galaxy
<r4m0n> it's a looooong trip, but not too bad after you get yourself a decent ship
<SilverFox> yeah I figured it'd be hella long
<SilverFox> ~wa distance to center of galaxy
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: Sagittarius A* | distance from Earth: 7.611 kpc (kiloparsecs)
<SilverFox> ~wa 7.611kpc to lightyears
<FoxBot9000> SilverFox: convert 7.611 kpc (kiloparsecs) to light years: 24823.7619080213360766686386124073345238547226736814216740460373340999386825121 ly (light years)
<SilverFox> 24,900 light years
<r4m0n> IIRC you can do around 100 ly jumps, might have changed in the last few years
<SilverFox> so that's like, 249 jumps
<r4m0n> something like that, yeah. IIRC you can do about 1 jump/minute, spreading the fuel scooping time you'll need every few jumps
<SilverFox> yeah, just get a ship full of scoops and away we go kind of thing
<r4m0n> it's pretty much that. as long as you don't screw up
<r4m0n> scoops only work on certain kinds of stars. if you end up without fuel on the wrong one, hope you aren't too far off someone to help you
<SilverFox> I got the Fuel Rats for that
<SilverFox> I could also plot the route to make sure that I hit only scoopable stars as well
<r4m0n> IIRC it gets harder near the core, but you'll definitely need to do some routing
<SilverFox> wouldn't doubt it
