<discord-> LordEidar. — If i want to enter orbit around Venus or Mars - should i do the insertion burn as close to the planet as possible or instead very high at what would be my AP?
<discord-> LordEidar. — I am not doing aerobraking on this probe
<discord-> lpg. — if you don't care what your final orbit is, burn as close to the planet as you can
<discord-> lpg. — (principia makes no difference for this)
<discord-> LordEidar. — I guess I didnt think much and only planned 500 m/s in the probe as the capture deltav for Venus is showing as 0.36
<discord-> LordEidar. — but since i was much closer, picked up more speed and would have needed more deltav to cancel it
<discord-> lpg. — no
<discord-> lpg. — that's only true if you want to _circularize_
<UmbralRaptor> Hyperbolic → parabolic (or highly elliptical) becomes cheaper with a lower periapsis because of the oberth effect
<UmbralRaptor> circularization is also often (but not always) cheaper for relatively low orbits
<discord-> LordEidar. — so i must be doing something else wrong
<discord-> LordEidar. — as a 500 ms burn barely changes anything
<discord-> LordEidar. — Is it because my initial burn in earth orbit was not efficient and now im moving too fast as I flyby Venus ?
<discord-> lpg. — 97Mm periapsis isn't exactly close to the planet

<discord-> LordEidar. — I have the same problem with my upcoming Mars one and its a 1.2Mm
<UmbralRaptor> what lpg said
<discord-> lpg. — 1.2M is still not very close, when it comes to Mars. but in this case it does look like your transfer was just not good, 9km/s seems _very_ fast for Mars
<raptop> MAVEN inserted into an inital mars orbit with a periapsis of 0.38 Mm https://lasp.colorado.edu/home/maven/science/science-orbit/
<raptop> And yeah, 9 km/s is high
<discord-> LordEidar. — Thanks for the help 🙂 need to send more probes now lol
<discord-> lpg. — the important lesson is never to take dv maps at face value
<raptop> 8 km/s hyperbolic eggcess?

<discord-> Calvin_Maclure. — Very quick question just to confirm something here: got a solid kick stage to enter into lunar orbit. Getting very different values for Pe depending on if I choose ''active engines'' or ''instant impulse''. With solid kick stage, my understanding is that it's the latter that's correct
<discord-> lpg. — it's not exactly _correct_, but it stands a good chance of being more accurate than pretending whatever engines are active will be doing the burn
<discord-> lpg. — you probably don't have solids that will be burning for over 10 minutes
<discord-> Calvin_Maclure. — Yeah, no that's what I figure.
<discord-> Calvin_Maclure. — That makes complete sense
