raptop changed the topic of #principia to: READ THE FAQ: http://goo.gl/gMZF9H; The current version is Gateaux. We currently target 1.8.1, 1.9.1, and 1.10.1. <scott_manley> anyone that doubts the wisdom of retrograde bop needs to get the hell out | https://xkcd.com/323/ | <egg> calculating the influence of lamont on Pluto is a bit silly… | <egg> also 4e16 m * 2^-52 is uncomfortably large

Chatz. — Hey folks, I'm new to Principia, running it in my RP-1 career - what's the best way to figure out lunar windows?
egg|laptop|egg has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<discord->
kalm_marx. — I think there will always be a lunar window. Just make a new maneuver with its apoapsis a bit ahead of the Moon. The only thing you want to know is when to launch to land at a specific place on it.

something something launching into the right plane

kalm_marx. — Does timewarp mess with orbits? like change Apoapsis and Periapsis?
<umbralraptop>
If you delete the rest of the universe and any non-spherical elements of the body that you're orbiting, no. But perturbations on those keplerian orbits exist
<discord->
kalm_marx. — No bot, I meant like just after timewarp stopped, the Ap and Pe increase by like 5 m/s or so
<discord->
kalm_marx. — but the predicted Ap and Pe don't change
<discord->
scimas. — What do you mean increase by "5 m/s"? Ap and Pe are altitude, they should have units of length, not speed.
<discord->
scimas. — And how do you know they increase by any amount if the predicted values don't change?
<discord->
kalm_marx. — The rate of increase, I meant
<discord->
kalm_marx. — Well, the Ap and Pe values shown by KER, MechJeb, and the predidicted values are all different
<discord->
kalm_marx. — THere are a few predicted Ap and Pe values in the map, all close to each other, The values shown by MechJeb and KER continuously change
<discord->
kalm_marx. — There are a few predicted Ap and Pe values in the map, all close to each other, The values shown by MechJeb and KER continuously change (edited)
<discord->
scimas. — Anything other than Principia doesn't understand N-body physics in KSP, so yes, the values shown by all those tools will keep changing as the patched conic approximation of the true trajectory keeps changing.
<umbralraptop>
egg is asleep, post 2-body physics
<umbralraptop>
but snark aside, what scimas wrote
<discord->
scimas. — And with the non-spherical Earth and other bodies' effects, the apoapsis and periapsis will change every revolution. Go to a high enough "orbit" and you will also see several Aps and Pes per "orbit".
<discord->
kalm_marx. — Ah okay. I was just starting to get worried. So I must refer only to the predicted Ap and Pe values then
<discord->
Butcher. — Ap and Pe as predicted by KER and the like change continuously, but the rate of change is not affected by timewarp.
<discord->
Butcher. — I use this handy script I wrote for kOS, it tells you which orbit to launch to get an intercept with the Moon.

egg. — > The elements given here are free from *short-period* variations, that is, variations whose period is approximately one revolution. This is in contrast to the osculating elements (those shown, e.g., by the MechJeb `Orbit Info` window, or the Kerbal Engineer Redux orbital display), which will exhibit strong periodic variations over a revolution.
<discord->
kalm_marx. — That makes sense now.
<discord->
kalm_marx. — The only real change in orbit happens over long periods of time then
<discord->
kalm_marx. — Thank you
