<Eddi|zuHause> so my height record was 16,5km. not quite enough
<Eddi|zuHause> now, finding a place to land instead...

<Eddi|zuHause> so... the two cockpits stayed intact, the wheels, wings, tail and front fell off :p
<Eddi|zuHause> oh, and all my science equipment is also still there
<Eddi|zuHause> so i might be able to get stuff from the landing site :p

<Eddi|zuHause> is it cheating to put a 10% scale rover wheel on a satellite just to fulfill a "test this part on an escape trajectory" contract?

<Mat2ch> Eddi|zuHause: pics or never happend!
<FLHerne> Eddi|zuHause: if it flies level at 15km it'll easily reach 18km in a zoom climb
<FLHerne> build up speed at a lower altitude where it works well, then pitch smoothly up into a steep climb to trade horizontal for vertical velocity
<FLHerne> you can fly a nice parabola through the contract location
<FLHerne> it's quite a fun challenge going after the ~18km ones using only the very first round of aircraft parts :p
darsie has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Mat2ch> I used to add a booster stage to those planes :P
<Mat2ch> But these missions are time consuming and have low rewards.
<Mat2ch> so I stopped doing them

<LunchBot> You find one of HarvesteR's ancient posts on a forgotten forum. They're beginning to learn...
<Judge_DedD> True story. It was fun reading the original KSP thread on the Orbiter forum
<Judge_DedD> Fun fact: HarvestR loved wobbly rockets
<Judge_DedD> He originally purposed to keep them floppy
<Judge_DedD> Fun fact 2: Original goal of KSP was to see how high you could get with a sounding rocket
<Judge_DedD> Fun fact 3: Original plan was to build the rocket from the bottom upwards
<Judge_DedD> (Sounding rocket was the wrong term. I meant suborbital)
<Mat2ch> Explains a lot of things.
<Mat2ch> But it's somehow deranged :P
<Judge_DedD> It's clear from that old thread that KSP became much, much more than originally intended.
<FLHerne> Mat2ch: I started out adding a rocket stage, then thought "this is ugly" and decided to do it with only jets
<FLHerne> "time consuming and low rewards" is moot to me, it's a game
<FLHerne> consuming time is the whole point :p
<FLHerne> (which tbh is why I don't play many games anymore: there are better things to do with one's time)
<Mat2ch> but it has to be rewarding in some way and if it's tedious I'd rather go clean my bathroom :D
<Judge_DedD> What are you doing with jets, FLHerne?
<Mat2ch> .oO( cooking dinner. Yes, I show myself out. :P )
<Judge_DedD> That's the Kerbal way
<FLHerne> Judge_DedD: early-career 15-20km altitude surveys
<Judge_DedD> Oh cool. Yeah I always use jets for things like that too
<FLHerne> doing it with Wheesleys is a bit challenging
<FLHerne> can be done though
<Judge_DedD> It is indeed.
<FLHerne> (this was in the context of Eddi|zuHause wanting to build a plane for doing such surveys)
<Judge_DedD> Ah I see.
<Judge_DedD> It's been a while since I tried it, but planes with those engines won't normally sustain that kind of altitude, will they? If I recall correctly, I would build up speed and then go nearly vertical
<FLHerne> yes, that's what I said :p
<Judge_DedD> Consensus!
<Judge_DedD> You're doing the internet wrong, FLHerne. You're supposed to disagree vehemently and bring up a strawman argument or insult my family.
<Eddi|zuHause> FLHerne: i could probably have tried flying better parabolas, but the plane had problems doing turns, so it was annoying to try again aiming up in the correct moment.
<Eddi|zuHause> and the mk2 plane was "worse" in the sense that it had trouble staying straight ahead and tended to swing left or right and start tumbling. not sure where that came from
<Eddi|zuHause> i used to be able to build planes that could fly stable without SAS
<FLHerne> I found Mk2 parts are always worse, tbh
<FLHerne> the only thing they're good at is being nigh indestructible
<FLHerne> need centre of drag a bit further aft
<FLHerne> remember CoM tends to shift aft in planes during flight because the engines are heavy
<FLHerne> so even if it's stable at takeoff it can become unstable after burning some fuel
<Eddi|zuHause> i checked full/empty fuel tanks this time, and also set tank priorities
<Eddi|zuHause> anyway, why are there no wing tanks?

<LunchBot> You play Simon says with crew on your craft. You find a large base in the shape of a swastika. You're surprised to find Hinduism this far out!
<Judge_DedD> Is that an Iron Sky reference?
<Althego> hehe hinduism
<Judge_DedD> There is truly a Hindu swastika
<Althego> yes i know
<Eddi|zuHause> why would people use iron sky, which to 100% consists only of references, as a source for "references"?
<Eddi|zuHause> that's like galaxy quest's "historical documents"
<Althego> hehe

<Eddi|zuHause> how do i use a "VTOL" engine correctly?
<Althego> to be honest it is easier to fly a real helicopter than a vtol craft in ksp
<Althego> i almost always fail with vtol
<Althego> if i turned off the computer help in the control which was fighting me all the time, i could position a chunky ch53 wherever i wanted
Ezriilc has joined #KSPOfficial
<Eddi|zuHause> it needs to be carefully throttled with the CoM in mind, and the game doesn't really do that

<LunchBot> You try explaining Isp to third-graders. Suddenly, time travel has been invented about 276 years in your future. A feedback loop radically alters your past and present.
<Althego> nobody would notice it. since everything would be in that way since forever
<Eddi|zuHause> apparently that was the moment where they thought things went wrong
<darsie> Isp is basically exhaust velocity turned into a unit everyone understands.
<Althego> or rather a unit that hold absolutely no intuitive understanding
<darsie> mhm
<Eddi|zuHause> maybe they thought that was my "gets rejected from art school" moment.

<Eddi|zuHause> i'm having a difficult time understanding the eva construction mode... if i select a small part, i can put it in an inventory, manipulate it, place it somewhere else. if i select a part in the middle it says i cannot manipulate it. so far so good, but now i got a "large" part at the end, and i can't do anything with it, but it also doesn't show an error.

<Eddi|zuHause> well, you can also get multiple kerbals to "help" with the stock feature, just it's only necessary on planets.
