<Eddi|zuHause> !mission
<LunchBot> Jeb uses his headlights to accelerate to two c. Say what you like about the alien killer crabs, but by God they can organise an invasion! We have a lot to learn from them - though we'd better be quick!
<Eddi|zuHause> that's mission/outcome backwards again.
Ezriilc has joined #KSPOfficial
<Eddi|zuHause> so, i started the game again, and turns out i have a million tourists that want to land on the mun...
<Althego> easy money
<Althego> you can also collect science too
<darsie> Easiest money is waiting for a high value asteroid search contract.
<Eddi|zuHause> but now i have to design a mun lander with high occupancy.
<darsie> They go up to 10 M or so.
<Eddi|zuHause> how does this stock inventory work nowadays, can i give a scientist a thermometer in the inventory and he can go around taking measurements?
<Eddi|zuHause> or should i build a rover for the "measure at different locations" contracts.
<darsie> rovers are slow
<darsie> and dangerous
<darsie> or unreliable
<Eddi|zuHause> i need to test a plane landing gear on suborbital trajectory on the mun
<Althego> just take it with yourself
<Althego> while landing or taking off you can do that
<darsie> Eddi|zuHause: Someone used a plane landing gear for lithobraking, so it's a reasonable contract ;).
<Eddi|zuHause> the small retractable landing gear doesn't come with a motor, right?
<Eddi|zuHause> but back to the original question, can a scientist take measurements with a thermometer in his hand?
<darsie> I don't think so. You can try on the launch pad.
<Eddi|zuHause> putting a heatshield on halves my return-dV
<Eddi|zuHause> hm... i can't figure out how to use inventory items
<FLHerne> Eddi|zuHause: it doesn't
<FLHerne> I've built rovers with it though, just need a little horizontal rocket engine :p
<Eddi|zuHause> it would be great hovering over a tourist in crew assignment to see where they want to go
<Eddi|zuHause> i really don't want to do precise rocket-hopping to take the measurements at specific locations
<Mat2ch> Eddi|zuHause: What is your problem with inventory items?
<Eddi|zuHause> i can put them there, but i don't know what to do with them.
<Eddi|zuHause> i think i need to use the KIS inventory for what i try to do....
<Eddi|zuHause> yeah, that seems to work, i can place it, and return it into inventory from there...
<Eddi|zuHause> 5800 dv is probably cutting it close for a mun landing and return?
<Mat2ch> with launch vehicle?
<Eddi|zuHause> from launch pad, yes
<Mat2ch> very very very close.
<Mat2ch> 3300 + 860 + 310 + 580. That's just for landing.
<Mat2ch> So 5050 just for getting there.
<Mat2ch> It could be enough if you get a very efficient launch and landing
<Eddi|zuHause> yeah, i need to find a place for more fuel.
<Eddi|zuHause> next question... where do i put the landing gear...
<Mat2ch> Do you have crew on board?
<Mat2ch> Because on return you can drop everything you don't need anymore.
<Mat2ch> Batteries, solar panels, landing gear :D
<Eddi|zuHause> yes. i already have all the science stuff behind a decoupler
<Eddi|zuHause> but that's an awkward place for putting the landing gear
<Eddi|zuHause> something tells me this is all going horribly wrong
<Eddi|zuHause> and there my science instruments break off during ascent :p
Tank2333 has joined #KSPOfficial
<Eddi|zuHause> i read something about a setting that resets (stock) inventory to default every time. where is that?
<Eddi|zuHause> and i will never understand how to make a rocket not flip on launch...
<Eddi|zuHause> hm... this ascent profile might have been slightly too low...
<Mat2ch> uh, switch on SAS, launch the rocket, when on 100 m/s tilt slightly over, let SAS do the rest. Correct only slightly and not too much, don't go over the green prograde marker in the navball
<Mat2ch> try to be at at least 20° or even far below when going over 10 km
<Mat2ch> reduce thrust if necessary
<Mat2ch> and if that doesn't help: Add fins.
<Mat2ch> (to the back of the rocket! :P )
<Eddi|zuHause> i tweak-scaled my fins, now it works
<Eddi|zuHause> i still might be too short on dv, though
<Eddi|zuHause> and i need to get the angle right to land at the location i want...
<Mat2ch> remember: Last minute burns are much more efficient.
<Mat2ch> more like last second burns. ;)
Deddly has joined #KSPOfficial
<Eddi|zuHause> that "last second" burn might need a higher TWR :p
<Mat2ch> oh. :D
<Pinkbeast> Simply build the rocket upside down, then it can't flip
<Deddly> Big brain

<LunchBot> Lacking better power options, you cover your rocket in Z-400 batteries. You have somehow proven the existence of birds.
Deddly has quit [Ping timeout: 195 seconds]
<Eddi|zuHause> dunno what's up with crew assignment... i carefully select tourists for the mission, and if you blink it reset to the original
<Eddi|zuHause> also, cursed rocket equation! adding more fuel doesn't actually add much more dv
<Mat2ch> If you add fuel, try adding it to the top stage ;)
<Mat2ch> or to the middle one and then add boosters to the main stage.
<raptop> Distribute fuel so that stages with higher Isp have equal or larger mass ratios than stages with lower Isp
<raptop> Unfun fact: optimizing for Δv like this often leaves you with stages with unsufficient TWR to complete the mission
<Eddi|zuHause> i have added a middle stage
<Eddi|zuHause> but that adds another heavy engine
<Mat2ch> are you limited by size or money?
<Eddi|zuHause> well, i'm not exactly swimming in money, but it should have a comfortabile margin, and only parts limit, which i'm not close
<Mat2ch> Usually for a Mun mission I do three stages.
<Mat2ch> One lift stage, which gets me almost into orbit, one transfer stage to get me into orbit and to Mun and then the landing and return stage.
<Mat2ch> for Mun return, if done correctly, you don't even need a heat shield and if you bring one, you can put the slider waaaayyyyy down (and save weight)
<Eddi|zuHause> i returned from mun orbit without heatshield already. then i tried one but the slider makes little difference. so i left it out again
<Althego> an electron and a falcon 9 launch is coming up soon, in like 30 and 45 minutes, but i need to sleep
