<Eddi|zuHause>
that was *technically* a landing but my materials bay broke

also, it was nowhere near where i wanted to land
<Eddi|zuHause>
starting also a... challenge...

i either need to reverse the steering of the gimbal, or the steering of the reaction wheels

i've 337m/s left in mun orbit, and found a maneuver with 285m/s to a 46km kerbin PE
<Eddi|zuHause>
PE ended up 32km, that might be a little low with no heat shield?
<Eddi|zuHause>
ok, that was like 98% of critical temperature for a long time
<Eddi|zuHause>
and it still dips out of the atmosphere for a short bit

antimatter I guess?
<Althego>
autopilot engaged. warping to stargate. warp drive active
<Eddi|zuHause>
i'm pretty sure antimatter doesn't have negative mass :p
<Eddi|zuHause>
you're maybe talking about tachyons :)
<Althego>
at least it was recently measured antimatter falls down too
<Eddi|zuHause>
any suggestions on high altitude planes? thinking of "take a measurement in flight above 18km" halfway around the planet
<FLHerne>
"halfway around the planet" for me would be a spaceplane (or even capsule) job
<FLHerne>
flying planes long distances at single-digit timewarp gets tedious
<FLHerne>
if you really want to stay in the atmosphere, fastest thing you can manage for the same reason, and the high altitude will be necessary anyway to stop it exploding
<FLHerne>
pretty much spaceplane design again, just no oxidizer or switch to rockets
<Mat2ch>
and autopilot.

plane doing weird stuff after 20 minutes of flight, probably something to do with load distribution?

did you check how the CoM changes with the fuel levels?

You will control the horizontal. You will control the vertical. You can roll the aircraft, make it flutter. You can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. You wonder what the hell is that weird round mountain on the horizon. It's Duna.

i don't understand mechjeb autopilot, when i set up an altitude (close to my current altitude) and a heading (close to my current heading), then as soon as i hit "engage" the plane tumbles out of control
<Pinkbeast>
In atmosphere?
<Eddi|zuHause>
yes
<Pinkbeast>
MJ autopilot I find is particularly prone to just yoinking the controls about (in the way that, say, in vacuum you can just go "apply maximum pitch for this long, wait, cancel it out".
<Pinkbeast>
)
<Pinkbeast>
"Atmosphere Autopilot" I find much better at actually flying planes.
<Eddi|zuHause>
i am generally terrible at flying planes myself. but while flying tends to get better after a few iterations, landing planes never really works...
<Pinkbeast>
In my (limited) experience once you have AA (which in spite of the name functions mostly as a fly-by-wire system) you can land a plane very easily by coming in basically at sea level.
<Pinkbeast>
You can't get away with this IRL because if an engine fails at an inopportune moment you're stuffed, but kerbal engineering is perfect.
<Pinkbeast>
(just as IRL it is discouraged to say "stuff the takeoff rotation, I'm just going to fly off the end of the runway level and then have clear air under me")
<Eddi|zuHause>
so, this plane travels quite comfortably at 15km, i've no idea if i can push it up to 17.5km for a tiny bit.
<Eddi|zuHause>
probably not
<Eddi|zuHause>
got 3 measurement points below, and 2 above.
<Pinkbeast>
At 15km I hope you have enough air under you to catch you if you find out
<Eddi|zuHause>
it's above ocean, so yes, probably :)
