Prey is set in an alternate history where America did not invade Vietnam
<Iskierka>
and apparently Kennedy actually didn't mind how much space cost, so him not being assassinated did *not* kill off space travel altogether
<UmbralRaptor>
o_O
<UmbralRaptor>
Though I suppose that's a less silly setting than Homefront, or especially Homefront 2.
<Iskierka>
I'm also uncertain how events work. The existence of a gameworld clock in the pause menu makes me wonder if there are station occurences that are time-based, thereby limiting what you can do
<Iskierka>
which is why I'm currently at exactly the opposite end of the station from where I should be rescuing pretty much the only person to not give me a reason to dislike them
<Iskierka>
she apparently had been told I'd been sent back to earth, which suggests to me she was actively not involved in the crazy experiments and was kept in the dark
<SnoopJeDi>
I'm quite tempted to pull the trigger on it, particularly after looking at my month's finances just now. Even after an aggressive transfer to my savings pot, I've got more money to splash around than I'd expected...
<Iskierka>
I am strongly suspecting multiple paths so it's also not the price for a single playthrough, unless by choice
<SnoopJeDi>
I rarely do multiple playthroughs :(

I've been berated quite a bit for not exploring the various endings of Undertale

(tl;dr there's a not-terrible way to check a slew of regexes in Python, but it's not well known)

oh wow every bot by the @CrookedCosmos author is pretty interesting

Gosh darnit reality can you *not* with the interesting stuff to look into

hah
* UmbralRaptor
feels like the only person who didn't like Undertale.
<SnoopJeDi>
I liked the music quite a lot and thought the typography jokes were clever
<Iskierka>
I couldn't find much interest for it
<Iskierka>
for conceptual stuff like the reloading-saves-but-not it's interesting but reading about it is plenty. seeing what happens for myself was not enough to actually keep playing more than a few minutes or so
<SnoopJeDi>
I enjoyed the dog fights
Sarbian_ is now known as Sarbian
<SnoopJeDi>
probably one of the best meta gaming moments I've had in the last two years or so
<SnoopJeDi>
Surely there's a more helpful way to structure that data. Even just including the name of the character...
<UmbralRaptor>
Why does that exist?
<UmbralRaptor>
And why is it missing a bunch?
<SnoopJeDi>
I followed my nose to the @CrookedCosmos author's GitHub and saw a fork of that and poked at it a little. It's kind of a misc. catchall corpus for Bot Stuff

wonders how hard it is to make a twitter bot. Say, to post randomly colorized bits of SDSS Stripe 82, or egg's ideology idea.

UmbralRaptor: jep_miner1 left a message for you in #SpaceX [10.05.2017 17:58:46]: "what's the cheapest scope you'd recommend for astrophotography?"
<egg|afk|egg>
UmbralRaptor: what idea?
<UmbralRaptor>
2 names that follow eachother in time. eg: Cauchy-Schwartzism
<UmbralRaptor>
Tsiolkovsky-Oberthism
<UmbralRaptor>
Kerr-Newmanism
<UmbralRaptor>
etc etc
<SnoopJeDi>
You could probably scrape names-and-dates from Wikipedia pretty handily
<UmbralRaptor>
Yeah.
<SnoopJeDi>
Since most persons have an infobox on the right-hand side with birth/death dates.
<SnoopJeDi>
Hardest part would be determining what categories to scrape?
<UmbralRaptor>
Mathematicians, obviously.
<SnoopJeDi>
Category/etc. tags would probably be enough to establish tenuous connectivity between people, and then there's always fancy-pants over-the-top stuff like TF-IDF
* SnoopJeDi
got nerd-sniped

<Iskierka>
commercial solder is ridiculous o.o
<Iskierka>
spent 3+hours removing & replacing the header of a pi HAT
<Iskierka>
think I also got a tiny (basically point) burn from having soldering iron at 450
<Iskierka>
... the other one I got from the same people is soldered on backwards
<Iskierka>
literally
<Iskierka>
I'd have to attach it underneath the pi to connect it properly
<Iskierka>
which WOULD explain why the pi restarted when connecting it
<Iskierka>
... so in total: the one I ordered unsoldered came soldered REALLY SOLIDLY, and the one I ordered soldered is on backwards and there are capacitors preventing me from sliding it through the wrong way anyway
<Iskierka>
these were not worth what I paid

<whitequark>
Iskierka: use indium-based desoldering aids
<whitequark>
it's borderline impossible to get the goddamn pb-free parts off the board otherwise
<whitequark>
well through-hole ones, smd ones are mostly fine
<Iskierka>
I did wonder what desoldering braid was for when a sucker and normal iron worked for other stuff
<whitequark>
desoldering braid works way better than suckers IME
<whitequark>
but often you'll just need both anyway
<whitequark>
or all three
<Iskierka>
I just wonder what on earth is in the commercial stuff, because even 99.4% tin, 0.6% copper solder only needs 230C and that's clearly lead free
<Iskierka>
I can understand them not getting the kind I did with 20% silver making it 220C, but still
<whitequark>
that's the liquidus temperature of solder
<whitequark>
when you have the board and parts sinking heat, even if you have the iron set way higher you don't necessarily heat the solder enough
<whitequark>
especially with low-power irons
<Iskierka>
60W iron with temperature control, can solder with my stuff at 260 or so, that stuff needed 400 to even have a chance
<Iskierka>
ended up maxxing the iron at 450 to clear the stuff, then 420 or so to tidy up what was left in the holes
