UmbralRaptor: so Domas Nogleshlimul, Baroness of Ancientbird and Baroness consort of Tradevale, has mandated the construction of two shields; so I ordered the forging of two steel shields

<egg|df|egg>
she's a goblin btw
<egg|df|egg>
somehow my mayor and baroness are both goblins
<UmbralRaptor>
So, your nobles are useful?
<egg|df|egg>
well, at least they make the things they want, albeit in a convoluted way
<egg|df|egg>
oh hey a strange mood
<egg|df|egg>
"a few months ago sulthu breachedtunnels became first kindness of the mellow fellowship"
<egg|df|egg>
also there's there was a succession in the coalition of treats
<UmbralRaptor>
o_O
<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: to be fair ancientbird belongs to the destined boats
<egg|df|egg>
so silly names are a running theme
* UmbralRaptor
gives ancientbird a dimetrodon.
* egg|df|egg
gives UmbralRaptor a diprotodon.
* egg|df|egg
has seen "glyptodon" used as a check that things weren't overzealously checking for "todo"
* UmbralRaptor
pets the giant marsupial.
<UmbralRaptor>
o_O?
<egg|df|egg>
well, it contains "todo"
<egg|df|egg>
I think if I had written that test I would have used diprotodon instead
<UmbralRaptor>
Proposal: have a lystrosaurus in charge of lists.
<egg|df|egg>
a dwarven scholar has become a student of a goblin engineer
<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: hmm, I have some gizzard stones in my butcher shop
<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: I think they come from the beak dogs
<UmbralRaptor>
hrm
<egg|df|egg>
hah, yet another instance of a merchant wagon disintegrating in terror upon seeing my ditches filled with the bodies of slain enemies
<egg|df|egg>
(free merch!)
<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: also, a visiting scholar holding an original quire that was written in Ancientbird
<UmbralRaptor>
\o/
<egg|df|egg>
(are they bringing back a borrowed book?)
<Iskierka>
is it made of glass?
<Iskierka>
(advantage of glass books: you can see "property of:" labels without having to take it from them and open it)
<egg|df|egg>
Iskierka: it's a quire, no binding
<egg|df|egg>
right now the library is just shelves upon shelves of quires
<egg|df|egg>
Iskierka: it's After the lens, one of the earlier works on opticks
<Iskierka>
are they already on reflective optics?
<egg|df|egg>
Iskierka: nah, After the lens talks about the glass lens somehow
<egg|df|egg>
also someone made a goose bone cage decorated with native gold and bituminous coal
<egg|df|egg>
there's an image of dwarves surrounding a dingo, relating to the rise of said dingo as an enemy of the destined boats
<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: a scholar has become an astronomer
<UmbralRaptor>

<egg|df|egg>
UmbralRaptor: also while the baroness is making the shields she wants, the mayor is melting down the goblinite

UmbralRaptor: I'm beginning to think that the ditch filled with corpses of fallen enemies that makes the merchants self-destruct in terror is detrimental to commerce
<egg|zzz|egg>
I mean I can just grab what they drop, but that's not really commerce
<UmbralRaptor>
It's an opening bid, an non of them make a counter offer?
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: I'm wondering whether I should move those corpses, and where (obviously I still want invaders to see that, but now invaders have a separate entrance
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: now the entire fortress is shuffling skeletons around

<egg|zzz|egg>
wow, that's a big fortress
<hattivat>
actually, can you declare days off work to celebrate some events from the past in df?
<hattivat>
"corpse shuffling day" sounds like a great holiday to me
<egg|zzz|egg>
458 citizens/permanent residents and nearly a hundred visitors
<e_14159>
egg|zzz|egg: Do you build modularly or organic?
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: the housing you mean?
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: dunno, I have a bit of a backlog lately
<e_14159>
egg|zzz|egg: The everything, actually.
<e_14159>
Whenever I think about playing df again, I want to build a modular 11x11 or 13x13 or something room system, then get demotivated designing it and don't start.
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: well things start out with a vague plan then the plan changes as requirements do
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: e.g. the great amphitheatre of starwatch of oxen, initially attached to 1x3 housing blocks around a central stairwell http://i.imgur.com/c2klRro.png
<egg|zzz|egg>
(engravings of early visiting scholars)
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: later on, 3x3 housing for the scholars was built on the other side, and a rectangular room was built for moar research http://i.imgur.com/Ll12xjh.png
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: the coloured graph shows conversations, the discussions seem messy :-p
<e_14159>
egg|zzz|egg: s/messy/academic
<Qboid>
e_14159 thinks egg|zzz|egg meant to say: e_14159: the coloured graph shows conversations, the discussions seem academic :-p
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: similarly, around the upper part of the mushrooms of riddling, initially there was 1x3 housing, then I added housing to the new standard http://i.imgur.com/EdEszaH.png
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: the blocks of 1x3 housing had their internal walls struck down, and now they contain drinks
<egg|zzz|egg>
it's fairly nice and symmetrical though
<egg|zzz|egg>
(besides the engravings)
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: some experiments with stonesense, showing the relatively new invader entrance (narrow bridge covered in traps above a hall covered in corpses, under fire from overhanging fortifications) https://goo.gl/photos/mQbHnRuX1e37bYzh9
<egg|zzz|egg>
when a goblin dodges a weapon trap, they fall down on the pile of corpses, and have to go back to the beginning of the bridge, all while being stabbed by bolts of various kinds
<egg|zzz|egg>
e_14159: on the same floor as the invader entrance there is the housing for the infantry; it's a bit too far from the taverns though, so they just tend to sleep in random bedrooms
<egg|zzz|egg>

<egg|zzz|egg>
wat
<hattivat>
I see most rooms are of the "Japanese hotel" standard
<egg|zzz|egg>
hattivat: ah, the 1x3 rooms? yeah, but I'm phasing them out
<egg|zzz|egg>
normally all scholars should have allocated 3x3 rooms in places that are designed with a quick access to the lecture halls
<hattivat>
egg|zzz|egg: yeah, they look sad ;p
<hattivat>
are dwarfs in df that Scandinavian?
<hattivat>
I mean, do they actually prefer a private 1x3 room over a 5x3 room shared with two other people?
<egg|zzz|egg>
hattivat: tbh if their room is far away they'll just crash at someone else's place
<egg|zzz|egg>
e.g. my infantry
<hattivat>
makes sense
<hattivat>
you could actually assume that their rooms get allocated according to their job
<egg|zzz|egg>
thte temple of no particular deity is getting quite popular
<hattivat>
...since it looks like a penal colony anyway ;p
<hattivat>
well, that would be my favorite temple
<egg|zzz|egg>
there's someone meditating on Nature in that temple
<egg|zzz|egg>
I'm wondering whether they mean the journal
<hattivat>
:D
<hattivat>
maybe it's a scholar engaging into that sort of magical thinking that motivational speakers often promote
<hattivat>
you know "if you imagine the object of your dreams hard enough, you'll get it"
<hattivat>
so perhaps they guy has a manuscript waiting for peer review
<hattivat>
the*
<egg|zzz|egg>
hattivat: actually that's an elf poet, not an elf scholar, so it's probably not Nature
<egg|zzz|egg>
hattivat: ... unless it's the Futures short story
<hattivat>
egg|zzz|egg: then perhaps he is a "religious naturalist"

apparently the most worshipped deity here is a deity of fish and storms, followed by a deity of order, a deity of luck (Dalem fortunechanced, that's appropriate), a deity of wealth, earth, mountains, and volcanos, then a deity of fortresses, war, valor, and jewels, and a deity of peace

No science god? >_>
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: apparently not; though I guess since they meditate on Nature...
<UmbralRaptor>
(how does French deal with the genders of abstract deities?)
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: example?
<UmbralRaptor>
Hrm
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: hmm, weapon-grade metal is scarce here (since it's all goblinite, only gold is found locally), so I'm forcefully downgrading the armor of my arbalesters; they will be wearing pond turtle shells on their heads and mussel shells on their hands!
<UmbralRaptor>
o_O
<egg|zzz|egg>
UmbralRaptor: I'm not sure whether I should make the leggings out of mussel or pond turtle shell
<egg|zzz|egg>
probably pond turtle, I can't see how mussel shell leggings would work mechanically

ferram4: quick question about FAR's speed display: it overrides the speed display only on in surface modes *and* only in the atmosphere, right? so, e.g., on the surface of the moon, the speed display will not be overriden?
<egg>
ferram4: also, if I mention you in an identifier, should I refer to you as ferram4 or ferram
<ferram4>
egg: I believe it overrides in all surface modes, including no atmospheres. Which usually means that anything besides true speed is useless. Also, ferram and ferram4 both ping me
<UmbralRaptor>
Iskierka: Floof! \o/
<egg>
ferram4: well hopefully not when I type it in my code
<egg>
ferram4: it doesn't appear to override when outside the atmosphere at least, where there's one
<egg>
(it so happen that when you override you override me, and it turns to KCKF as soon as I leave the atmosphere)
<ferram4>
If it's not in surface mode, return. If there's no atmosphere, return.
<egg>
ferram4: ok, so I'll take care not to fight you (if surface mode is selected while in an atmosphere, I will force the reference frame to the surface *of the body with said atmosphere*, and leave the speed display to you; otherwise it's mine)
<egg>
ferram4: otoh the direction is independent of your atmospheric shenanigans (IAS, EAS, Mach, Surface speed are all parallel) right? so I can keep drawing the Frenet trihedron myself in all cases
<ferram4>
Yes. IAS and EAS are simply ways of representing the density change on the speedometer (technically, removing the density correction that is already needed to get to TAS), and everything else is unit conversions.
<egg>
ok, sounds good
<Iskierka>
though how does FAR do IAS when that's mainly differing by sensor error IRL, and you don't have a sensor to error?
<egg>
ferram4: the density correction that is already needed to get to TAS << wait, don't you have the true air speed in this case (which isn't the case with actual instruments, but here it's what you start with, right?)
<ferram4>
egg: Technically, true, but I'm speaking from a real life perspective here.
<egg>
right
