The different methods people have come up with for taking I/V curves of electronic components are amusing. My prof is one of those lab instructors who, if you propose a method of doing something which is really inefficient and roundabout while there's a much better and easier method, will say "yeah, that sounds great! you should try it!" instead of telling you the "right" way, which I think
<Ellied>
is great.
<SnoopJeDi>
Experience does a great job teaching :P
<Ellied>
so we have somebody programming a Pi to talk to an MCP-3008 to measure current and use PWM and an active low-pass filter to set the voltage, someone else (me) who just hooked up a function generator and an oscilloscope in X-Y mode, and also someone else who decided to just sit there and twiddle the knobs of a power supply and write down the multimeter readings on paper.
<Ellied>
I've also had the same conversation with a number of people:
<Ellied>
"did you do the spectrometry project yet?" "yeah, it took me a couple days to wire it up and the data collection had to run overnight for a week, but I got all the data." "what, a couple days? I just used the Ocean Optics units and was done in half an hour." "yeah, but I got the TRIAX working!!"
<SnoopJeDi>
The knowledge differential adds up *fast*, but I'm sure you've already noticed
<Ellied>
knowledge differential?
<SnoopJeDi>
What you learned in doing it the "wrong" way vs. "I just..."
<Ellied>
right, yeah. I've also been discovering firsthand just how wrong it's possible to be when you think "I already know how to do that, I don't need to bother actually doing it now"

<AlexSteffen> Cities mandating that stores charge shoppers 25¢ for each bag but not a penny for parking is an interesting climate action priority.
<UmbralRaptor>
most grocery stores are inaccessible without a car.
<UmbralRaptor>
There are additional considerations, but that's the big one.
<Ellied>
maybe most of them where you live.
<Ellied>
I can think of a great number of grocery/department stores in Chicago that offer free parking.
<Ellied>
(despite being in easy reach of the CTA/bike lanes/etc)

UmbralRaptor: true, a lot of this is suburb hell with city planning is ugh.
<UmbralRaptor>
fair enough.
<UmbralRaptor>
It's always Fun when the only cheap housing is middle distance suburbs.

Or 2 morning / 2 afternoon / 0 weekend bus lines
<UmbralRaptor>
The last line is specifically referencing Kansas City.
