<egg|cell|egg> Bofh : what happens if you autoroute ground?
<bofh> egg|cell|egg: oh gods. so typically in like, every PCB I've seen, you either have a separate layer as a ground plane or you make ground take up as much of the board as possible.
<bofh> the reasons for this are twofold: EMI suppression and so that you can send return currents to ground w/o voltage drops between component grounds (since, if component A is at one ground potential and component B is at another and they are at a different potential level, you now have current flowing from ground to ground)
<bofh> now, autorouters are designed to route power/signal/etc traces: so they'll create traces that minimize board space, often snake a lot, and are very thin. so an autorouted ground will fail at EMI suppression and often have enough resistance to, in fact, create ground loops *on the circuit board*.
<bofh> this is merely stupid for something that works at low clock frequencies but if you're working at high clock frequencies or with analog RF at >450MHz then crosstalk, RFI and ground loops likely will cause everything to be unstable and give chaotic weird failure modes.
<bofh> whitequark and/or rqou prolly have more to add.
<whitequark> bofh: oh yeah i have something to add
<whitequark> bofh: highlighted is a ground trace on an official lattice devboard https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DS9fWKOXUAIeEkx.jpg
<whitequark> ovals mark fpga power bypass caps
<bofh> that's... actually that's a typical amount of bypass caps, I think.
<whitequark> bofh: uh
<whitequark> take a look at the center bypass cap
<bofh> ...UH. *stare*
<whitequark> yes.
<whitequark> "scenic route ground trace" as someone called it
<bofh> What the shit, that's got to be autorouted. No person would route a ground trace that stupidly. I *hope*.
<bofh> ACCURATE.
<whitequark> nope, that's manually routed.
<whitequark> we know because uh
<bofh> I have... questions.
<iximeow> "scenic route ground trace" sounds uhhh accurate
<whitequark> because a "senior strategic marketing engineer", whatever that means,
<whitequark> has admitted that he has "hired a high school kid in sri lanka to do the routing"
<iximeow> huh...
<bofh> *blank stare*
<bofh> I have *so* many more questions.
<whitequark> bofh: oh that's not all
<whitequark> a different (less insanely routed) devboard from lattice has
<whitequark> ...
<whitequark> this is what the datasheet for this specific device says to do.
<whitequark> first, the device doesn't actually have a GNDPLL pin.
<kmath> https://twitter.com/moonreminder/status/1033669173388423168 <moonreminder> everyone go outside and look at the moon
<whitequark> second, this is how the board is laid out: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DS9EdMoX0AA8q4q.jpg
<iximeow> GNDPLL should not be connected to the board's ground, ah, clearly
<whitequark> iximeow: no that remark is normal.
<whitequark> it's internally connected but brought externally so it can be bypassed without forming a ground loop
<bofh> ^
<iximeow> is that usually a different ground or?
<iximeow> ah
<whitequark> that's pretty typical for analog circuitry
<whitequark> but the fact that they fucked up their own devboard is just [chef's kiss emoji]
egg|cell|egg has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<iximeow> yeeeeeeeeah

<whitequark> the PLL on the scenic route ground trace board? nah
<whitequark> doesn't lock
<bofh> *pulls up dadasheet for the CDBU0520* UH.
<bofh> 3.3-0.35 != 2.5
<whitequark> bofh: oh yeah that too.
<whitequark> I was proofreading my schematics and then I looked at their devboard and then at their documentation and that was a massive WTF
<bofh> like I've literally used Si diodes for that before but if you need 0.7V drop why in Nyarlathotep's name would you pick a Schottky diode?
<kmath> <whitequark> in awe of the mad design skills of whoever made the Lattice iCE40-UP5K-B-EVM devboard ⏎ first, they assembled the VCC… https://t.co/ALIfCNFKbf
<kmath> <whitequark> free advice: the routing of the vagus nerve in your body is not to be taken as inspiration for routing ground traces on the PCB
<bofh> ROFL
<whitequark> bofh: so the VPP2V5 thing is real weird.
<whitequark> VPP_2V5 can actually stay at just 3V3 if you never program the NVCM
<whitequark> (internal bitstream ROM)
<whitequark> but then you could have literally just tied it to 3V3
<whitequark> which, in fact, they also recommend
<bofh> okay, that makes the magical mystical diode placed there even more of a strange choice.
<whitequark> I think they're just not very good at designing hardware
<bofh> I am *completely* not surprised the PLL on the scenic route ground trace board won't lock, but uh, that now makes me ask the next obvious question, namely: did they, like, test the devboard *at all* before doing a massive production run/tapeout?
<whitequark> well they clearly didn't test the PLL
<whitequark> which is used by one of their refernce designs
<whitequark> HDMI something
<bofh> *stare*
<whitequark> also people in the discussion thread about this board report that reading out the flash contents as shipped implies that...
<bofh> Is QA not existent at Lattice Semi or something?
<whitequark> ... the flash is recycled from some Cisco router and still contains Cisco firmware
<bofh> ROFL
<iximeow> omg
<whitequark> I imagine they sent it to whichever Chinese assembly house provided the lowest quote and called it a day
<bofh> Yeah, prolly.
