<Greys>
so, in a movie, that takes place in space, where there are wars, there is a scene where one ship "bombs" another ship, like carpet bombing, in space.
<Greys>
does educating the populous on niche topics like orbital mechanics, that arguably will not be useful to their lives, make movies worse
<Greys>
if I hadn't gotten into KSP, I don't think it would be readily obvious to me that you can't fucking bomb a thing in orbit from another thing in orbit, you can't drop shit from orbit A to orbit B, where A and B are similar; you might be able to drift slowly between them, sometimes, at certain parts of the orbit, but that's not going to be in a general downward direction
<Greys>
so if I didn't know all of this stuff that's not useful to my life, I would be capable of believing that scene

The Star Wars bombing thing?
<TheKosmonaut>
It was accurate to the extent of the technology in Star Wars
<TheKosmonaut>
The bombs are electromagnetically driven
<TheKosmonaut>
As for why they wouldn’t launch them from a distance it was because they had to fly through the shields first.

<Greys>
SilverFox, a while back you asked a question I don't remember about "direct drive", and I gave a dodge answer; I just learned that direct drive is a type of 3D printer filament mechanism
<Greys>
I imagine that even with appropriate filaments direct drive is more accurate than the other kind that I don't know the word for
<Greys>
does anyone make a 3D printer that uses a liquid material which coagulates in response to being pushed through the hot end?
<SilverFox>
I probably wouldnt ask you about direct drive mechanisms in 3d printers, tbh
<Greys>
mmkay
<Greys>
then there was AvE's belt grinder, it was direct drive
<Greys>
in the beld grinders I've used most of them have been belt drive; this is a choice exclusively made to allow the motor to be in a better position to make the machine as a whole smaller; but his belt grinder is way more of a grinder where the smaller ones are more like huge belt sanders
<Greys>
I've never seen a belt drive belt grinder that had significant gearing ratio; so the direct drive would perform the same except it wouldn't have a belt that could slip
<SilverFox>
that was the direct drive i was on about
<Greys>
makes sense; short of it; direct drive will operate correctly at higher torques, which let you use higher speeds; but the machine gets a lot bigger
<SilverFox>
whats the benefit of high speed grinding?
<SilverFox>
me thinks there'd be a maximum useful speed
<Greys>
cutting speed is a huge deal in machining, with a single belt going different speeds will remove different amounts of material in a not quite linear way; it'll have wildly varying surface finish, heat generation is a big deal but that's mostly about going slower
<Greys>
as a pretty distant example, if you run a drill bit too slow, even at the correct feed rate for that speed; it'll just explode
<Greys>
you may enjoy to get a physical or digital copy of the Machinery's Handbook, my copy is 29th edition; it's the industry standard encyclopedia of how and why to do any machining from the formulas and tables of thread profiles to how fast to spin the thing when you're going to touch two things together for the purposes of removing material; to specifications of various G-code formats
<TheKosmonaut>
Greys: no it wouldn’t be. Also, I don’t mean they’re magnetically drawn to the target, but the rails they’re on were supposedly magnetic rails that propelled the bombs.
<Greys>
ok so they're more like magnetic mortars, thrown at first and then later guided
<Greys>
some youtuber should make a mortar-launch FPV glider
<Greys>
no onboard propulsion, it just gets thrown out of a tube and then the wings flip out like peter sripol's replica javelin
<Greys>
basically peter's javelin but instead of being launched near-horizontal with an onboard rocket, shot straight up from a cannon

<Greys>
who wants to be a smallbusinessaire
<Greys>
buy a very small retail storefront and a laser cutter, sell the service of people bring you a file, some material, and you cut the file out of the material; 30$/hr or whatever
<Greys>
then buy more lasercutters as profits allow
<Greys>
SilverFox, what's a typical wattage for the kinds of laser cutters that normal people might buy
<SilverFox>
dunno
<SilverFox>
laser cutters arent my business
<Greys>
does 2200 watts sound close to that?

dunno, laser cutters arent my business
<Greys>
what if the laser cutter had a great butt
<Greys>
or a mild infection
<SilverFox>
1) I'd look at it 2) call doc to order anti-biotics
<Greys>
the laser cutter is allergic to pennicilin; what's the dosage for a 2.2kW cutter?
<SilverFox>
notify doc of allergy
<SilverFox>
done
<Greys>
patient probably ways 7 tons
<Greys>
weighs*
<SilverFox>
why do you want a 7 ton laser cutter?
<Greys>
oh no, it's not for me, it's a local company, they have this thing
<SilverFox>
great, they'll figure it out then, not my issue
<Greys>
hey look, a bunch of words that don't really make much sense together and then a video about a cool device (but not the pornographic series cool devices) https://youtu.be/nSE3GmUdxoQ

there's 16 cylinders to a sterling engine which is heated by gas power

how?

going to buy more 8GB of RAM to keep it from crashing during memory spikes
<Greys>
at least 8gb of ram is a cheap item these days
<Greys>
I got 16gb of ram for 50$ last year
<SilverFox>
"cheap" it's not
<SilverFox>
16GB is like, 200$
<Djohaal>
I'm in brazil shit is overpriced here
<Djohaal>
for starters we have 100% customs tax
<SilverFox>
noice
<Greys>
you should move to any place that's not worse than brazil; like.............

<SilverFox>
Djohaal, did you have to take a class called healthcare consumer or some shit?
<SilverFox>
how american of you, comparing big mac prices
<Djohaal>
we had a couple of courses we jokingly called health and socialism
<Djohaal>
where they kept bullshiting that cuban healthcare is the best in the world
<SilverFox>
pfffffffft
<SilverFox>
good shit
<Greys>
Cuba has healthcare?
<SilverFox>
yes

anyways, we have a healthcare consumer class and it's basically a nursing history class and which reports led to what health bills and its totally useless to us practically because knowing the healthcare act came in like 1984 isn't going to prevent my patient from getting out of bed
<Greys>
according to statista canadian big macs are currently 4.66CAD, american big macs are 5.30USD, and brazilian bigmacs are 5.1BRL
