<xShadowx> i gotta say it....from wandering to other games and seeing whats available modding-wise for config only / no code, every system i'm seeing sucks except for ksp cfg files -.- i think ksp spoiled me
<Virindi> ...but code is where it's at! :D
<xShadowx> yeeep
<xShadowx> but not the point
<Virindi> code is the ultimate in flexibility :)
<xShadowx> indeed
<xShadowx> still not the point though :P
<Virindi> people don't make rasterpropmonitor style plugins for other games?
<xShadowx> i think the worst system i seen is 7dtd, cant code a mod, so xml edits only, and worse, you have to edit the core game xml, not your own standalone set in your config folder -.-
* xShadowx stabs bad modding design
<Virindi> do they have a system like, to try to let you do logic using xml "directives"?
<taniwha> xml is a "language" to be avoided
<Virindi> those are always a pain to use because you inevitably hit some huge limitation
<Virindi> yay someone else who hates xml :D
<xShadowx> no logic, just filling out object values
<Virindi> :(
<xShadowx> taniwha: s/avoided/burned with fire
<Qboid> xShadowx thinks taniwha meant to say: xml is a "language" to be burned with fire
<taniwha> xShadowx: I don't want to harm the fire
<xShadowx> good point ;\
<Virindi> if your goal is to pointlessly increase the size of your data by a factor of 10, XML has you covered!
<taniwha> ConfigNode is fluffy, but at least it's human readable
<taniwha> (and writable)
<Virindi> it seems pretty similar to json, makes me wonder why json wasn't just used
<xShadowx> i like ksp style, close enough to json, but without the extra characters clogging it up
<xShadowx> compared, its better than json, cleaner
<Virindi> it's nice though
<Virindi> yeah, it is
<Virindi> it doesn't seem to handle lists and such, dynamic data, as well
<taniwha> really, as far as I'm concerned, both KSP style and json are similar to PropertyList
<taniwha> (ie, NextStep)
<taniwha> (or OpenStep? can never remember which)
<xShadowx> the biggest thing i hate on confignode is the endless GetValue/SetValue overrides
<Virindi> json lists make sense, but when perusing config files I have often seen stuff like
<Virindi> command1=123
<Virindi> command3=789
<Virindi> command2=456
<Virindi> which is like a windows ini file, sigh
<taniwha> xShadowx: they were necessary
<xShadowx> taniwha: why couldnt you add GetValue<T> when you worked for the devil XD
<taniwha> because C# is not C++
<xShadowx> ? that works in C#
<taniwha> anyway, bigger fish to fry
<xShadowx> true
<taniwha> like, for example, the 1000m depth limit
<Virindi> what? depth limit?
<xShadowx> below water?
<taniwha> orbital intercepts
<taniwha> xShadowx: yeah
<xShadowx> if only ksp merged with subnautica
<xShadowx> o.O
<taniwha> Virindi: prior to 1.2, if you got below 1000m (iirc), the world disappeared
<Virindi> hah
<taniwha> now it does not :)
<xShadowx> taniwha secretly works for the government, and hiding the truths of real life
<Virindi> well water also caused you to explode if you hit it at more than 1m/s and parts had completely random seeming buoyancy, recently enough
<Virindi> makes sense under those conditions to not care about underwater
<Virindi> it's funny though how some of the most fun things to do in ksp are just tooling around kerbin
<taniwha> it wasn't so much "not care", but more "not know"
<taniwha> Virindi: yup, I love flying around mountains
<Virindi> I think like 75% of my time in ksp has been in building far spaceplanes
<xShadowx> only if scatterer and rve are installed :P
<taniwha> xShadowx: even without them
<Virindi> nice stache, jeb
<taniwha> slight kethane bug, iirc: http://taniwha.org/~bill/screenshot3732.png
<taniwha> see, even without scatter or eve, quite fun :)
<taniwha> (and yes, that's a cargo-drop)
<Virindi> I mean, FAR for me basically changes the game from "meh" to "holy crap this is FREAKING AWESOME" :)
<taniwha> yeah
<Virindi> I think I just want a flight simulation, as realistic as possible, where you can build your own crazy airplanes. And take them to space. I was really impressed with the aset plane props
<taniwha> well, that's pretty much what KSP+FAR is
<taniwha> (add in RO, and you're even closer, but good luck getting a plane to space)
<Virindi> yeah I tend to stick with kerbin, earth makes planes no fun
<taniwha> Yeah, it takes longer to get from Japan to Hawaii than it does to circumnavigate Kerbin
<Virindi> I have been meaning to try it with the mk2 addon scramjet though
<Virindi> scramjets seem to be the realistic ticket to an earth ssto, if you can do it without exploding
<Virindi> just like real life! <3
<taniwha> btw, 2.28GW for a Mainsail
<Virindi> what?
<taniwha> that's the power generated by its thrust
<taniwha> so if you attached a turbine to a Mainsail, you could probably get about 1.8GW of electrical power from it (assuming 80% efficiency)
<taniwha> of course, you'd chew through LFO like there was no tomorrow :)
<Virindi> <joke>hey no problem, change it to H+O, and just use the turbine power to run a system to generate it from water</joke>
<Virindi> (joke designation required because I have spent quite a bit of time arguing with people who believed exactly that was possible)
<taniwha> sadly, too many would just glaze over the <joke> :(
<taniwha> and I'm slow :P
<Virindi> spent days arguing with a friend of mine, an engineer, who believed that he could run his truck on nothing but water...with the engine running H+O powering the alternator to generate more H+O
<taniwha> he was not an engineer
<taniwha> (may have had the title, but...)
<Virindi> him: "it's been proven, person x has demonstrated it"
<Virindi> me: "I'm going to need a little more than someone at a fly by night startup trying to sell a product to shake my belief in thermodynamics"
<taniwha> thermodynamics is not something which one believes. it is something which one curses
<Virindi> true, it's science, "belief" is the wrong word...it's not faith, it's just a likely rule based on a lot of observations
<taniwha> this makes me both laugh and cry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HOgkzZc4Co
<kmath> YouTube - Fukushima: BEYOND URGENT... BUSTED!
<taniwha> laugh at the idiocy of the fear mongers, cry at their prevalence
<Virindi> I both like and don't like that guy, it's weird, I'm so conflicted...I mean it is really "lowest common denominator" but I was laughing like crazy watching the one on the orbiting building
<Virindi> freaking hilarious
<Virindi> but you'd get more power because the solar panels are closer to the sun?
<Virindi> :D
<Virindi> lot of comments on that video like "because I play KSP I know this is impossible", A+
<Virindi> I mean comon, the building would be longer than physics load range!
<Virindi> clearly that can't work.
<taniwha> heh
<taniwha> he himself has it right, though
<taniwha> (just watched that skyscraper one)

<Virindi> aaaand I just spent a day trying to figure out what my problem was and it turns out that ksp's kerbal turn while walking NaNs out when the kerbal is facing exactly aligned with the camera
<Virindi> ....floating point inaccuracy...........woohoo
BasharMilesTeg_ has quit [Ping timeout: 201 seconds]
<Virindi> if this is right then every once in awhile a walking kerbal should "stumble" sharply to the side for one physics tick
<Virindi> 4.5 degrees
<Virindi> ish
<Virindi> hrm I guess that 4.5d comes from the animation and NaN just triggers it
<Virindi> yep everytime in the idle state, nan and erroneous 4.5 degrees :D
