Its actually more of a hope of a centralized "channel".

Discord is better than IRC, for the fact that you aren't required to log in every 2 weeks minimum to keep your name, for one. For two, multiple channels for a single discord server so all KSP enthusiests can meet up in a single area and pick their channels.

Bots still work in Discord, with more advanced features even.

I'm not fond of discord personally, but I just use miranda for that as well as IRC so it looks almost the same to me

Factorio had an IRC pressance, but someone there made a discord for it which is much much more popular than the IRC.

Plus, here in Espernet, you only get two ranks tops and can't do many things like going back and looking at old messages while you were offline.
