<Iskierka>
is it bad that I'm winning a war against a fallen empire entirely by exploiting its AI?
<Iskierka>
my fleet total power ~80k, theirs at least 287k. But I have a buffer state and my core worlds, which they appear to be very interested in, are on the other side of my empire from the buffer state
<Iskierka>
so to come at my core worlds they're taking three jumps across my territory. Meanwhile, I have a 40k fleet hiding in neutral territory nearby their core worlds where they can't see it. When they get close to my core, I jump into theirs, they come back to deal with it, I jump out, they can't find me so go back to my core worlds
<Iskierka>
as such they never take anything, meanwhile two other fleets are slowly invading their satellite empires that were normal low-tech empires like me, but neither can even come close to matching either of those fleets
<Iskierka>
so I'm just slowly whittling them down with proxy wars while distracting them from attacking on the main front
<Iskierka>
and I'm currently only about 50 warscore from a total victory. Started at like -130
<Iskierka>
(or worse)

I thought about going back to Stellaris but the features in the Banks update look pretty game changing so I'm still waiting for that to come out
<Iskierka>
I'm getting a few games in to try see a few more leviathans before Banks, so that'll be more isolated
<Lyneira>
my last game (which I never got even close to the endgame in) I was playing a species of space elves that live on tropical worlds and refuse to settle anything else - in a galaxy with 50% less colonizable worlds. So most of the early game revolved around teching up society as fast as possible to get to terraforming
<Lyneira>
Luckily due to the lower amount of colonizable worlds I didn't have many neighbors and the AI empires I met seemed to have as much trouble expanding as I did
<Iskierka>
interesting. I might try a low habitability galaxy next
<Iskierka>
technically at 2330 this game shouldn't be the endgame, the fallen empires awoke way too early (and shouldn't have been in the game to begin with)
<Lyneira>
So to go with that I made my space elves nonadaptable (since they refuse to settle non-tropical anyway) and gave them a society research bonus, and science directorate government to increase the chance of terraforming
<Iskierka>
but I'm having to make it work with a fleet massively unprepared to deal with an awakened empire
<Lyneira>
Is it too late to just bow down to them?
<Iskierka>
it's not too late to just get white peace. But they've annoyed me now and I think there's enough worlds for me to make a decent stab at getting total victory
<Iskierka>
(they in fact sue for white peace every 6 months or so)
<Lyneira>
when the AI is in such an overpowering position they should just split up their fleet so they can't be distracted by a tactic like this
<Iskierka>
they should. but in most wars, doomstack vs doomstack is the only real way to win in one major conflict and whoever comes out on top will win the war. It's the specific layout of neutral states and satellites of the AE that let me keep them distracted while taking over their satellites
<Lyneira>
well as long as there is neutral territory to hide out in, couldn't you use this tactic on any empire?
<Iskierka>
they could also counter me by building sufficient military stations in the system I jump into for a distraction - it works because it's bsaically empty
<Lyneira>
Ah, so a few military stations would draw you into combat and then their fleet could come in to finish the job or force you to suffer a retreat
<Iskierka>
potentially, but against other empires they're more likely to have many systems and lots of coverage, so there's fewer spots to reliably hide. I'm actually hiding in a third FE who didn't awaken and like me, who prevent this AE from expanding
<Iskierka>
that has happened a couple times when I tried distracting in other systems, yes. Fleet is very survivable so made it out, but was then missing for a few months that meant I couldn't distract them
<Iskierka>
it's a viable tactic but not necessarily so universally applicable as you might guess. Might not even work at all without psi jump drive to get as far out as possible
<Iskierka>
(which, relatedly, I HAVE noticed the AEs use normal jump drive. So we've got maybe a couple years before unbidden turn up too)

I had a student come up with the answer 12345.6789 on the homework I just graded. I thought "you've got to be kidding, they just gave up and guessed that" but then it turned out that it actually followed their math.

huh

it was still wrong, but it was a minor error.
