"I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do and there's tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact, so no, I would not agree that it's a primary contributor to the global warming that we see,"

technically it's provable that CO2 isn't the primary contributor, it's only about 1/3 of the increase seen based on its optical properties
<Iskierka>
however that 1/3's ability to heat the atmosphere to hold more water which is also a GHG can easily mean that 1/3 is 100%
<Iskierka>
(on the contrary to there being too little data, there's plenty, the connections just need to be established)
<UmbralRaptor>
What would the rest be? I don't think we've changed albedo *that* much, and understand that CH4's effect is only ~10% that of CO2's.
<Iskierka>
Water would be the best candidate

Well, going by the scrollback, Iskierka typed water before I asked.
<Iskierka>
CO2 directly contributes 1/3, but water being a stronger GHG likely contributes most of the rest. But that extra 1/3 heating is likely what is elevating the water level enough for the 2/3 extra
<Iskierka>
harder to measure since water varies so quickly (clouds notably 100% counteract the effect) and across levels of the atmosphere, and you need to infer how much is caused by elevated heat or weird weather or as an exhaust and such
