Did you hear? Astronomers are deciding to rework the definition of "planet" once again, making Pluto and a bunch of it's dwarf planet siblings officially planets again!
<Iskierka>
11 days early
<Pinkbeast>
Pluto's obv. a planet since there's a Sailor Pluto
<Iskierka>
the main character was sailor *moon*
<Pinkbeast>
That doesn't matter for... some reason I haven't thought of yet.
<Pinkbeast>
The Moon was inhabited, that makes it an honorary planet

I think they divide dwarf planets into two classes, Dwarf Planets, like Pluto, that have enough mass to easily retain a good spheroid shape. Then there are dwarf planetoids, which are basically giant asteroids, not at all like Pluto.
<Qboid>

<Ruedii>
I personally think the IAU should give the finger to and submit to the pro-pluto groups by adding a classification of "Minor Planets" as well as "Major Planets"
<Ruedii>
Our planetary system has 8 major planets, and a little over 100 minor planets.
<Iskierka>
we already did that
<Iskierka>
they're dwarf planets
<Ruedii>
However, saying that dwarf planets really are planets by "upgrading" the major planets is probably a more appropriate perspective. Also, downgrading some of the dwarf planets to dwarf planetoids would better give the distinction of what a dwarf planet is.
<Iskierka>
except there'd be no border to downgrade anything on. if they're planetoids and not a planet they're a dwarf planet or moon (and planetoid is specifically the round shape, there's no such thing as a "dwarf planetoid")
<Iskierka>
I also find it quite ironic that literally the only reason pluto was ever even considered is because it's literally the whitest object in the solar system
<egg>
though lots of things used to be classified as planets too
<egg>
Ceres etc.
<Iskierka>
which meant the whole thing was frankly always wrong and some silly people just hung on too tightly to pluto. We actually have correct classification now, and pluto is still in the larger planetoid category. It is just not a full planet
<Iskierka>
full planet is reserved for the ones that actually control the movement of the solar system, so there's just 9 of them
<Iskierka>
but while ceres was misclassified with reason, pluto wouldn't have been considered at all if not for its white. Entirely the reason
<egg>
though "cleared the neighbourhood" is a rather ill-defined terms as they go
<egg>
also why is this in punoffial rather than academia
<Iskierka>
eh, it's fuzzy, but it's fairly easy to agree on in the Sol system, and it's unlikely that other systems will be too much fuzzier (so long as binary planets are an accepted possibility)
<UmbralRaptor>
Fuzziness is probably unstable in the long run.
<Iskierka>
if we get planetary resonance where they're arguing with each other in another system, we'll just figure out something more clear that defines neighbourhood and cleared
<Iskierka>
UmbralRaptor, as in if it's not clear, it's probably not how the system will look later?
<UmbralRaptor>
Also notable, if not for Lowell (and that we got Neptune's mass wrong), Pluto would likely have been found decades later.
<UmbralRaptor>
Iskierka: yeah.
egg is now known as egg|zzz|egg
<Iskierka>
really, if it's fuzzy, doesn't that specifically mean it's not cleared its neighbourhood, thinking about it?
<Iskierka>
so you may observe bodies too young to be planets
<UmbralRaptor>
Yeah
