Althego: never know these days, the new generations seem to take some things for granted and not think stuff through (heck, I've literally played FPS games with with people that didn't understand the concept of calling out clock directions because they've never even seen an analog clock...)
<Althego>
hehe
<Althego>
how is t hat even possible
<Althego>
somewhere they had to see an analog clock. a railway station, an airport, whatever
<SporkWitch>
no one wears watches any more and they have smartphones strapped to their hands from like 5 years old, never any cause to look at one or learn
<Althego>
to be honest i find analog clocks hard to read
<SporkWitch>
Americans also do a lot less rail and air travel than others, and i'm pretty sure most subways in the US have had digital displays for decades; I know they're all digital in DC
<Althego>
it takes so much more effort than to just read the numbers
<SporkWitch>
sure, but they were a product of their time. Watch a video on just how a mechanical watch works, it's incredible.
<Althego>
actually most people find it easier
<Althego>
probably because they just want to know the approcimate time
<SporkWitch>
i actually have a mechanical pocket watch with transparent face, and the back also opens to both function as a stand and so you can see the workings inside

<Kerbal_Meister>
ohh im going to check it out, right now i just dumped them into the game data folder but that didnt seem to work
<Deddly>
I also highly recommend CKAN
<Deddly>
Especially if it's your first time installing mods
<SporkWitch>
further recommendation of CKAN, it's basically mandatory
<Izaya>
not using CKAN is like installing software without a package manager
<Izaya>
just asking for trouble
<SporkWitch>
(if you're not familiar with a package manager, think "app store" on a smartphone)
<darsie>
use ckan
<Kerbal_Meister>
Just installed CKAN. This is amazing. I have never seen something easy and automatic like this.
<darsie>
:)
<Kerbal_Meister>
No im a little familiar with software stuff
<Kerbal_Meister>
This is so cool
<SporkWitch>
you may need to tweak the "compatible version" settings, as some mods have older versions listed as the max supported, but they'll still work fine anyway
<Kerbal_Meister>
This is great. Thank you so much guys
<Deddly>
Awesome. Just remember not to install too many mods at once, otherwise you might run into trouble and we won't know which mod is causing it
<Mat2ch>
also having too many mods can slow down KSP
<Mat2ch>
and I don't just mean the loading times :D
<Kerbal_Meister>
Yes, thanks. I only installed MechJeb 2 and KSP Recall for now.
<Kerbal_Meister>
Yeah i have a pretty old PC so im not going to install any graphic mods XD
<Izaya>
Might want to grab KSP Community Fixes too
<Izaya>
It helps with some base-game memory leaks
<SporkWitch>
some recommended mods that either improve graphics or provide QoL improvements: Alarm Enhancements, AmpYear (calculates how long your batteries will last, and how much you need to survive night/dark side transit), Astronomer's Visual Pack, Distant Object Enhancement (see things farther away, like ships and planets), Docking Cam, Engine Lighting Relit (adds emission for engine plumes),
<Kerbal_Meister>
What do memory leaks cause?
<Mat2ch>
Kerbal_Meister: slowdowns... many
<Izaya>
the more mods you have the more extreme they get, too
<Kerbal_Meister>
Docking cam and Alarm Enhancements sound great. Had countless times Exploding after a 45min. trip....
<Izaya>
(generally, anyway. ideally mods contain no bugs, but haha)
<FLHerne>
effect of a memory leak is that the game steadily uses more and more memory over time
<Kerbal_Meister>
Ah thanks
<FLHerne>
(because it allocates memory but forgets to free it)
<SporkWitch>
Environmental Visual Enhancements Redux, Maneuver Node Evolved and ManeuverNodeSplitter (adds some tools to more easily set up nodes how you want), Parallax (adds more terrain clutter to make things more interesting), PlanetShine (reflected light from planets surfaces), Real Plume and Waterfall (improved engine plumes), SCANsat (adds satellites to create maps of bodies, really fun and pretty),
<FLHerne>
until eventually it's used all your memory and hangs or crashes
<SporkWitch>
and finally, TUFX and Textures Unlimited, to enable the enhanced texture and lighting packs.
<raptop>
Obviously I should just get a machine with a few exabytes of RAM
<Deddly>
SporkWitch, he did just say he's not looking for visual mods
<Izaya>
tfw upgraded to 32GB and it's still not enough
<FLHerne>
Izaya: I had that :-(
<FLHerne>
although not for KSP
<SporkWitch>
i missed it as i was already typing
<Deddly>
:)
<Izaya>
zswap goes a long way though, it ends up with compression ratios in the 95% range
<SporkWitch>
I would point out that Paralax and RealPlume don't seem to have any meaningful performance impact, but do improve the visuals. Waterfall definitely stay away if you don't have a good CPU and GPU
<FLHerne>
Virgin Orbit launch in a few minutes
<Izaya>
Parallax absolutely has a performance impact
<SporkWitch>
i literally didn't notice any difference with or without it on my old GTX1060
<Kerbal_Meister>
Guys I have a gameplay question. I have a small research station on the North Pole (for fun) and i wanted to drop a rover over there with some supplies from a rocket (went great). Is there any way to set up something like an autopilot or something for a precise landing? Whenever i try to "Set Target" my rocket just aims straight at it causing it to
<Kerbal_Meister>
crash.
<Izaya>
It certainly makes the game look better, but rendering that extra geometry isn't free
<FLHerne>
I guess perf impact depends whether you were GPU or CPU-limited before
<SporkWitch>
Kerbal_Meister: you can program your own autopilot with kOS mod, or you can use mechjeb (its landing autopilot has mixed results)
<FLHerne>
if you have a good GPU and are CPU-limited by physics calculations, the extra geometry won't cost much
<Izaya>
Kerbal Engineering Redux, Trajectories, and kOS all have something along those lines
<SporkWitch>
trajectories and KER are really good ones for providing you guidance for a manual landing
<SporkWitch>
KER's suicide burn timer is also really handy and fairly accurate
<Kerbal_Meister>
Thanks guys. Going to try it out.
<SporkWitch>
You might also look into BonVoyage, which can automate rovers to travel in the background. Make sure to save before loading in, though, and fiddle with the settings to figure out what will get it to load in without exploding heh
<SporkWitch>
(strongly recommended, as you might have noticed wheels aren't exactly reliable, especially at reasonable speeds, so this makes exploration much less of a chore)

Izaya: oh, I have to try those community fixes
<packbart>
MechJeb's Landing Guidance can be iffy when the TWR is too high (or too low). When it works, it sets the craft dow within a few m of the target (so make sure not to target the base directly, unless it's got a landing pad :)
<SporkWitch>
it also loses its mind if you do any staging after starting it; i think it does most of the calculations ahead of time and only makes minor corrections in-flight, so it can't account for a big TWR change from either dropping tanks or dropping a whole stage and changing engines
<packbart>
well, the example above includes staging and control point change after starting the autolanad
<Izaya>
Trajectories also doesn't cope with staging, apparently it's much harder to simulate the atmospheric effects on future states of the craft.
<umaxtu>
for some reason, I've never gotten into KOS
<packbart>
I like the terminal but I just can't stomach the syntax
<Izaya>
kerboscript is awful
<packbart>
whoever came up with the kOS language really hated programming
<SporkWitch>
it uses periods instead of semicolons and it drives me insane lol
<packbart>
RedOnion's Lua with kOS nice terminals, that would be a thing

love Lua
<packbart>
well, the mod was last updated two years ago. I only ever got around to run a few tests with it ( https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/189983-110x-redonion-unrestricted-in-game-scripting-v052/ )
<packbart>
I used to automate much more with kRPC. now I build differently or use MechJeb ;)
<Izaya>
Last I checked, kRPC didn't work with Lua 5.4, so I didn't go down that route; something to do with the protobuf libraries.
<packbart>
I used the Python variant to run mining probes and transfer between fuel tanks
<packbart>
(with MechJeb called from kRPC to do the docking, landing and launches)
