<funkenstein> For some reason when I first built a small plane in KSP it landed and handled beautifully, but now when I try to make the most simple plane possible to get to the island runway or the nearby mountains for some science, anything I build handles like absolute mystery goo, especially under 100m/s.
<funkenstein> What am I doing so wrong? I have my CoM about one goo-length ahead of my CoL
<raptop> I'd wildly guess something with control surface location
<raptop> Maybe previously they were farther from the CoM
<funkenstein> They're at the wingtips and edges of the main wings
<darsie> V-tails don't work well for me.
<raptop> hrm, maybe. Probably good role control but questionable pitch?

<SporkWitch> local leet time
<Althego> nice
<SporkWitch> been a while since i actually caught it heh
<darsie> Bug: This aircraft produces thrust under water (even when the air intake is under water): https://0x0.st/o748.png
<Althego> it used to
<darsie> I tested the engine while splashed down on Kerbin.
<Althego> it doesnt need to actually work
<Althego> i usually just slap it on a tiny solid bbooster
<darsie> and a chute
<darsie> We shoudn't say chute. Chute mean fall and parachute means against fall.
<darsie> We also shouldn't say atom, when we mean the particles which can be split.
<SporkWitch> technically it would be 'chute, to show we're abbreviating, but people are lazy, and it's so ubiquitous people just understand the intent
<darsie> Same with toms. ppl know what we mean if we say atoms.
<SporkWitch> also, technically, atom was chosen because at the time it was thought it was the smallest particle and couldn't be split further, hence the discrepancy between the name's meaning and reality
<darsie> mhm
<darsie> Paraglider is weird, too. It means against gliding.
<Althego> hehe
<darsie> :)
<Althego> languages are full of stuff like that
<Althego> inflammable
<Althego> anybody who says that needs a slap instantly
<SporkWitch> "We also shouldn't say atom, when we mean the particles which can be split." this one just reminds me of that physics paper that's written in purely germanic english: https://youtu.be/IIo-17SIkws?t=190
<Althego> because it means absolutely nothing
<packbart> see also: Ultra High Frequency in laughable MHz ranges
<SporkWitch> etymonline says "defense, protection against" as the latin root on para, so "paraglider" makes sense if we consider the glider the means of defense
<SporkWitch> other weird issues crop up if it's a neologism, rather than something following more traditional etymology, e.g. paralympics, not referring to the latin "para" but rather "paraplegic," which follows a far more convoluted etymological path from the same latin "para" root
<darsie> From Ancient Greek παρά (pará, “beside; next to, near, from; against, contrary to”).
<darsie> From French para-, from Italian para-, from para, imperative of parare (“to defend, shield, shroud”), from Latin parō (“I prepare”).
<SporkWitch> in the end it's all filthy romance infection of my lovely germanic english! lol
<Althego> do all kerbals speak the same language?
<SporkWitch> i'm going to use the potential for space races in KSP2, combined with what competitive play and mods will mean for outright warfare, to say there's lore justification to say "no"
<packbart> does a hive mind have a language?
<Althego> wouldnt be a hive mind
<darsie> Althego: Do the mobile ones talk at all?
<SporkWitch> a hive mind has no need for language, it would only complicate things. Language is necessary to convey ideas indirectly; a hive mind simply knows
<Althego> mobile kerbals? the astronauts?
Fluburtur has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<darsie> yeah. Not the ones in the Astronaut compled and Gene.
<Althego> now that you mention it no
<Althego> does chatterer count?
<darsie> Sometimes they pop.
Fluburtur has joined #KSPOfficial
<darsie> Or splash.
<darsie> chatterer is not stock. idk
<SporkWitch> chatterer isn't needed; even without it there are still a few sims-like murmeruings, like when you open up the mission control and such
<SporkWitch> apologies, caught back up now, no, without chatterer there's no speech outside of the scripted stuff in tutorials or when changing to certain scenes
<Althego> yes
<Althego> but those are for kerbals in the ksc
<Althego> the non mobiels ones
<SporkWitch> yup, was just confirming / agreeing
<Althego> i like the sounds when you accept a mission
armed_troop has joined #KSPOfficial
<packbart> ack. I added them to Chatterer for that reason
<SporkWitch> it would be a nice touch if they added some exclamations and general mutterings to the kerbals in KSP2. I think it'd be hilarious to hear a scream when things explode lol
<Althego> you can just see them scream
<Althego> currently at least
<Althego> but a lot of tiny touches are there, like head movements for acceleration
<Althego> so i can imagine sounds too
<SporkWitch> you can, and they're putting a lot of work into making them even more expressive and to react to the forces applied to them, which is why i don't think attaching some voices as well wouldn't be out of the question
<Althego> in ksp2
<SporkWitch> yup
<SporkWitch> straight up, if kerbals built a hydroelectric generator lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVoeaKCEd2o
<Althego> doesnt seem to rotat
<SporkWitch> Althego: did you mean at the very end? it's because they didn't have it fully open so they didn't have the full water pressure on it; when they hit hte drill that controls the valve, you see it spin real nice
<Althego> yes, the end
<SporkWitch> yeah, they only had it partially open so they could see when they'd bled all the air and make sure they had it lined up right; once they had it set, they opened it all the way
<Althego> as realplayer once said: net congestion. buffering
<Althego> (it never was, they were local files)
<Althego> still didnt get even half of the image
<SporkWitch> i was more of a winamp user back in those days, but wasn't realplayer originally designed for streaming audio? If so, a generic message isn't surprising
<darsie> could be 0x0
<darsie> perhaps everyone is downloading it now :).
<Althego> what, you didnt even build your own cdn all over the earth
<darsie> 0x0 is not mine
<Althego> baszhatom azt
<Althego> lol not this
<SporkWitch> i apparently lost the other good one i got back then: "connecting to broadband connection. Dialing..." >_< lol

<Althego> the image almost loaded
<Althego> tiny spacecraft with many seats. must be crowded
<packbart> I once made my own CDN when I did my virtual trip around the world. looked for cheap VMs (<5€) around the world on lowendbox.com, rented them for a month and played a bit with geoip-aware DNS and varnish caches on all of them
<packbart> don't really have a need for it, so I cancelled most of them. I kept Helsinki and Singapore

<SporkWitch> funkenstein: not if it's attached / docked. Sending it to the lab is a button like keep or transmit, unlike transmit it requires a physical connection to the lab, but you don't need to go and manually grab it. Just review the experiment result and click the flask button

<funkenstein> Preferably not in an ocean
<SporkWitch> i prefer 共匪
<raptop> As long as the rover isn't coming back, that doesn't seem like an excessive problem?
<Izaya> Eve is probably easier than a lot of places, assuming you don't want to come back :D
<SporkWitch> and yeah, higher gravity tends to mean better rover behaviour, just make sure you have good structural support as that gravity is punishing
<funkenstein> It's just that I haven't got the Atlas parts unlocked yet. I meant to, but I clicked the wrong node in R&D
<SporkWitch> assemble in orbit?

<SporkWitch> saturn 5 with asperagus staging on top: for all your heavy payload needs

<funkenstein> A good deal of my weight is in a fuel tank, I assumed if I wanted to ascend hills on eve I would need to do so under rocket power
<funkenstein> Would that be correct
<SporkWitch> depends how steep. i'd almost think it easier since the main issue i find with rover handling is traction in low gravity
<funkenstein> I don't know how steep it gets on Eve, if duna was any sort of example I will have trouble
<funkenstein> Brb
<SporkWitch> then clearly the only solution is to build a mech

<funkenstein> Wheels work, no steering. Is that normal for the XL3s
<SporkWitch> i think some of the larger wheels work tank-style, rather than actually turning
<funkenstein> There's no response to any command but w for forward
<funkenstein> And s
<SporkWitch> how many wheels?
<packbart> yeah, the XL3 don't turn. they use differential steering (one side goes faster)
<funkenstein> Four
<SporkWitch> how spread out? might need to add more
<funkenstein> Evenly around the center of mass
<packbart> is the control point set correctly?
<funkenstein> Nope it was set to up o_0
<SporkWitch> lol
<funkenstein> Dunno how I missed the lack of horizon on the navball
<funkenstein> ;mission
<LunchBot> You build a space bus. You are pinned to the ceiling by the reactor vessel plug.
<SporkWitch> ... you're not supposed to use the plug that way...
<funkenstein> That's what she said
<raptop> [ed note: the outcome is a reference to SL-1]
<SporkWitch> it's rocketry, you're never escaping the phallic references lol
<funkenstein> Interesting. I used cheats to do a test drive on Eve and found holding forward while alternating the left and right controls I can go 8 times as fast
<packbart> yeah, it's a "feature" of the differential steering
<funkenstein> That's not how it works on cars in my experience
<funkenstein> Lol
<packbart> wiggling left and right accelerates beyond the weels' max speed
<SporkWitch> things like that are pretty common physics bugs in games; watch any speedrun, 9/10 involve diagonal movement, especially in older games that just did hard movement speed limits
<SporkWitch> ^
<FLHerne> ;mission add You wiggle left and right to accelerate far beyond your wheels' maximum speed.
<LunchBot> Added mission: You wiggle left and right to accelerate far beyond your wheels' maximum speed.
<FLHerne> at least it's not Over The Road Racing where you can reach infinite speed in reverse
<funkenstein> What
<SporkWitch> that was an exploit in portal, too lol
<funkenstein> ;mission add You shift into reverse and break the light speed record.
<LunchBot> Added mission: You shift into reverse and break the light speed record.
<SporkWitch> by facing the opposite direction of movement when you land from a jump, the slow-down force is applied in the wrong direction, accelerating you instead of slowing you back down to the speed limit lol
<funkenstein> Hilarious
<SporkWitch> think it was portal that had that bug...
<funkenstein> I managed 28m/s on a 15 degree incline on eve, but going downhill caused a tilt then a front flip
<funkenstein> Which should be more difficult in a 4 meter tall rover
<funkenstein> With a wheelbase of about 6 meters, I think?
<funkenstein> Flherne thanks, my ears are ringing from the engine noise
<raptop> ah, yes, ABH
