egg|anbo|egg: if it's using peltier cooling to reach 253 K, sure, why not. If it needs liquid nitrogen, however…
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: yeah peltier
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: monochrome or котяchrome
* UmbralRaptor
would lean towards monochrome, though that makes image processing more of a thing.
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: on the one hand yes, on the other hand: cows
<UmbralRaptor>
laser guide cows
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: no but i mean cows move so stacking filtered images seems hard
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: is it possible to turn a filter wheel fast enough to get cowpics
<UmbralRaptor>
Yes, though I think that fell out of fashion when vidicon tubes did. >_>;;
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: they do still appear to be a thing
<UmbralRaptor>
hm
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: hm, i guess rgb and i can get a mono one for fancier imaging if the rgb is fun
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: do you need bovine photometry,
<iximeow>
+1 for cooled ccd, they're convenient and long (>20s) exposures get really noisy at ambient temp
<iximeow>
UmbralRaptor: why monochrome preference? i haven't looked enough to understand the difference (beyond the obvious)
<iximeow>
oh egg|anbo|egg if you go with котяchrome you'll probably want to muck with color balance for longer exposures anyway - i've noticed a strong bias towards green from my camera for ??? reasons
<UmbralRaptor>
iximeow: for filter selections / too much time messing with color-color diagrams and the like.
<egg|anbo|egg>
iximeow: yeah but at least i can get colour cows :-p
<iximeow>
full spectrum bovine
<UmbralRaptor>
A plot of cows in V vs B-V might be amusing.

<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: how are V and B-V defined again
<UmbralRaptor>
That is, B and V (and U, R, etc…) are defined with specific physical filters that are supposed to have simple and well defined transmission properties. B-V is the magnitude in B minus the magnitude in V.
<UmbralRaptor>
Or, flux in B divided by flux in V. Modulo some log silliness.
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: hmm
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: and how would you eggspect cows to vary in V vs. B-V?
<UmbralRaptor>
Unsure, but some might have hides that get redder or bluer as they grow?
<egg|anbo|egg>
UmbralRaptor: also wait how do they vary in V in the first place
<UmbralRaptor>
egg|anbo|egg: well, a larger cow would reflect more light, so would have more overall flux. (if spread out by enough to make surface brightness rather constant)
<egg|anbo|egg>
oh so normalized for illumination and distance?
<UmbralRaptor>
Yeah. Distance for a given herd should be relatively constant, at least.
