does fortran do network packets?
<UmbralRaptop>
I eggspect so.
<SilverFox>
so theoretically it'd be possible

isn't fortran mainly used for math?

SilverFox: Personally, I'm running a neural network for egg-puns. Works eggstremely well, most of the time.
<APlayer>
A neural network for puns?
* APlayer
needs to know more
<e_14159>
Well, I've trained it for quite some time; unfortunately, it's mostly blackbox and eggstremely difficult to analyze and reverse engineer. OTOH, it's deployed on specialized hardware and actually running in real time with little energy need (~20 Watt).
<APlayer>
That's more dedication to pun automation than I would have
<e_14159>
Also includes sarcasm generation and general NLP utilities
<APlayer>
Does the sarcasm generation work, though?
<APlayer>
I mean, egg-puns sound comparatively trivial (to me at least). But sarcasm generation would require some trivia or cultural knowledge?

<iximeow>
UmbralRaptop: if you disabled all specualtion and hyperthreading it'd probably be surprisingly close per-core, yes
<UmbralRaptop>
lolsob
<iximeow>
you wouldn't have avx and they'd be more power hungry, also slower memory access..
<iximeow>
also throttling complicates things a little, since they won't run at 5.0ghz f.ex, but modern cores will scale down under full cpu load anyway so that's closer than single-thread single-core workloads
<iximeow>
(UmbralRaptop: additionally if you removed all caching out of concern re additional side channels, the situation is even worse)
<UmbralRaptop>
aaaaaa
<UmbralRaptop>
(This is incidentally not a hypothetical question, given that we're looking to upgrade or replace a cluster full of Core2 era Xeons)
<iximeow>
imo the nuance around when any of this matters isn't discussed enough
<iximeow>
the same issues could be said of any software caching ("oh that request was fast? someone made a similar request recently, hmmmm")
<iximeow>
like for a compute cluster? sure! newer cores! more speculation! awesome, things are faster! don't put secret data there, don't reuse keys there that authenticate you to anything you care about, and you're .. probably fine

otoh my browser reading key material out of memory because they're cohabitant on my desktop is awful and terrifying
<iximeow>
rather, your javascript reading key material out of memory from my browser*
<BPlayer>
Something tells me that websites employing JS to actually spy any useful data from you this way is impractical, if possible at all. Probably much easier to find other ways that do not depend on the specific CPU you have and require later careful analysis of the mined data.
<SnoopJeDi>
Counterpoint: when "deliver payload to the maximum number of users" is the main use-case for JS, scale can make a lot of things practical :(

UmbralRaptop, I would say JS represents a larger threat surface area, but Equifax is probably a more existential threat since it's highly sensitive personal identity data.
