megapixels are 'relevant' but they don't mean much alone, like I said the U11 is 12MP and the 816 is 13MP, but the U11 wins by a landslide in functionality and manages to produce better images because of better quality

in the case of the selfie cameras however, the difference between 5MP and 8MP in print media is the difference between pixilation on a 4x6, and apparent film fidelity

so going up to 16MP on it's own is the difference between a useless camera and a useful camera

more than likely that selfie camera will also be functionally and technologically superior so it's not just producing more useful pictures, but higher quality pictures

resolution also ties into video capture; 1080p is roughly 2MP, so for every 2MP you have, it's feasible to subset the sensor and do rolling captures that allow you to capture 1080p video more effectively with inappropriate sensors
